Gaven Lane fired a two-day score of 103 to lead Argyle to its fourth UIL Class 4A state golf team title.
With Argyle making its 11th straight tournament appearance, Lane’s heroics were good enough for him to finish just two shots behind Wimberley’s Jaxon Donaldson as runner-up medalist.
Lane’s teammates also enjoyed strong showings with Justus Christman posting a 110 score, Ethan Payne and Zane Griggs finished at 116 and Blake Kelly at 121 for an overall team score of 442 (296-146).
“Appearing in every UIL State Golf Tournament since 2012, Argyle Eagle Golf is bringing home another for the trophy case after the Eagles win their 4th boys team championship,” the school posted on its Twitter page.
Being in the spotlight comes as nothing new for Lane, who once reigned as the U.S. Amateur’s youngest competitor. When he was just 14, Lane played in a match play tournament at Pebble Beach.
Though he failed to make the cut, Lane has expressed it’s an experience he won’t soon forget.
“I learned that I need to just let my attitude determine how I play instead of how I play determine my attitude,” he told Golf Week. “Just to carry myself better.”
Lane has already verbally committed to attend Oklahoma State and took visits to Oklahoma and TCU.
In the end, he said the decision to go with OSU was easy.
“OSU is a really good golf school, good history,” he said. “I like how it’s closer to home. I mean, just really couldn’t go wrong with it.”
