Denton Ryan five-star linebacker Anthony Hill has de-committed from Texas A&M, announcing the crushing news for the Aggies on Monday.

Hill is the nation’s No.17 overall prospect and No.1 linebacker in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports. Hill holds 33 scholarship offers, including from of Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, and others.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder has 67 tackles (47 solo), four tackles for loss, and two sacks this season for Ryan.

Hill is “one of the most dynamic defensive prospects in Texas and the country for his class,” according to 247Sports Scouting Report, and he “projects as an impact high-major starter with long-term early-round NFL Draft potential.”

Hill initially committed to Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies on July 30, choosing them over Texas. He will reportedly be in Austin this Saturday to watch the Longhorns take on undefeated No.4 TCU.

The highly touted five-star prospect was in College Station this past Saturday, where he watched Texas A&M lose to Florida 41-24, which was the Aggies’ fifth straight loss, giving the program its longest losing streak since 1980.

Hill intends to announce his commitment elsewhere during the early signing period in December, according to his father.

“I’d like to thank Texas A&M, [co-DC/LBs] Coach [Tyler] Santucci and staff for recruiting and developing a personal relationship with me and my family,” Hill told On3. “Thank you to the Texas A&M fans who have been a great support throughout my recruitment. After further difficult discussions with my family, I will be decommitting from Texas A&M and opening up my recruitment.”

Texas A&M entered year five under Jimbo Fisher with championship expectations after the Aggies signed the top-rated recruiting class of all time during the 2022 cycle and were ranked No.6 in the preseason AP Poll.

The season went off the rails early when A&M was stunned by Appalachian State of the Sun Belt Conference in its second game. The Aggies bounced back with wins over Miami and Arkansas but have been in a downward spiral since with five straight losses.

A&M currently sits at 3-6 and last place in the SEC West with a 1-5 conference record. The Aggies will need to win all three of their remaining games against Auburn, UMass, and No.7 LSU to become eligible for a bowl game.

With less than 50 days until the early signing period opens, Texas A&M has only 11 commitments in its 2023 recruiting class. The Aggies’ class sits as the No.23 in the nation and No.8 in the SEC, according to 247Sports.

If the struggles for A&M continue this season, there is a chance that more of its committed prospects could bail from the current class.

Coach Fisher and the Aggies recruiting staff will need to finish the year on a high note to keep the rest of their class intact, as there are not many highly ranked uncommitted prospects left.
