Former NBA guard Iman Shumpert was arrested at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport over the weekend after authorities allegedly found marijuana in his bag.
Shumpert was stopped at a TSA checkpoint around 2:40 p.m. on Saturday by authorities responding to a possible drug violation call, according to TMZ Sports. Upon investigating, 6.12 ounces of a “green leafy substance” that later tested positive for marijuana was found.
Police also claim Shumpert had a Glock magazine and 14.9mm rounds in his bag but did not have a gun.
Shumpert was then put in handcuffs and taken to the airport jail without incident. He could face up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine if convicted on the charges, which Texas classifies as a “state jail felony.”
Recreational marijuana is legal in several states, and medical marijuana is legal in Texas. However, the substance remains illegal on a federal level.
Federal law enforcement has jurisdiction over all airports and air travel, so TSA officers that find drugs are required to report their findings.
Shumpert, 32, has not played in the NBA since a two-game stint with the Brooklyn Nets during the 2020-21 season. Since then, he has won Season 30 of “Dancing With The Stars.”
He was a member of the 2016 NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers but also played for the New York Knicks, Sacramento Kings, and Houston Rockets over his 10-year career.
For his career, Shumpert averaged 7.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
