Egypt Makes History: Beats Australia 4-2 On Penalties To Reach First World Cup Round Of 16

Egypt Makes History: Beats Australia 4-2 On Penalties | Image posted 07/03/26 by FIFA @FIFAcom/X

It took more than 120 minutes of bruising, back-and-forth football and a nerve-shredding penalty shootout, but Egypt finally got its hands on a piece of World Cup history Friday, edging out Australia 4-2 on penalties after the two sides could not be separated at 1-1 through extra time at Dallas Stadium.

The victory sends the Pharaohs into the Round of 16 for the first time in the country’s history, where they’ll face the winner of Friday’s late match between Argentina and Cape Verde. For Australia, the run ends in agonizing fashion, unable to convert a golden opportunity to reach the knockout stage’s second round.

At the end of the game, man of the match Mo Salah – as well as plenty of Egyptian fans in Arlington – could be seen with tears of joy in his eyes.

A High-Intensity Match From The Jump

The stadium was electric well before kickoff, with those tears visible among Egyptian supporters who understood the weight of the match, while a boisterous Australian fan base essentially matched them decibel for decibel. Egypt’s Manager Hossam Hassan got the answer he was hoping for when Mo Salah, who had battled a hamstring injury strain all week, was confirmed in the starting lineup.

Australia came out the more aggressive side early, with Cristian Volpato ripping a shot from the top of the box that clipped the crossbar in just the fourth minute. But Egypt seized control as the half wore on. In the 13th minute, Emam Ashour rose knocked in a header to put the Pharaohs in front, sending the Egyptian sections of Dallas Stadium into a frenzy.

By the break, the numbers told the story of Egyptian control: 61% possession, a 0.41-to-0.26 edge in expected goals and 88% passing accuracy compared to Australia’s 80%. Still, the Socceroos had matched Egypt with a shot on target apiece and refused to fold.

Australia Fights Back

The second half opened with a scare for the Socceroos, as Egypt nearly doubled its lead within 15 seconds of the restart. Moments later, defender Mohamed Hany went down hard while defending a header but still stayed on the pitch.

Australia’s persistence paid off in the 54th minute when the Socceroos found their equalizer. It was initially credited to an Australian attacker, but it was later confirmed as an own goal by Hany – the same defender who had just fought through the earlier collision and injury break. The goal ignited the Australian faithful and flipped the momentum heading into the game’s final stages.

However, neither side could find a winner in normal time despite a flurry of late chances, including a stoppage-time save by Australia’s first goalkeeper that preserved the 1-1 scoreline and sent the match to extra time.

Extra Time and a Bold Gamble

The additional 30 minutes were a grinding, exhausted affair as both defenses held firm. Salah had the best look of the period in the 92nd minute but couldn’t find the finish, still appearing to favor the hamstring injury that had threatened his availability all week.

In a stunning move just before the final whistle of extra time, Australia boss Tony Popovic substituted goalkeeper Patrick Beach for veteran Mat Ryan – a pure penalty-shootout specialist swap with the match still level at 1-1.

Heartbreak For The Socceroos From The PK Start

The shootout swung wildly from the opening kick. Egypt’s Mahmoud Saber calmly opened the scoring, and Australia’s captain Harry Souttar sent his effort well over the crossbar to hand Egypt leverage. Jackson Irvine steadied Australia with a composed finish before Ramy Rabia restored Egypt’s lead.

Australia answered again, only for Salah himself to coolly convert and put Egypt back in front.

The end came in the fourth round. Egypt’s fourth shot locked in the 4-2 shootout win and set off a wild celebration among the Pharaohs’ bench and even Egyptian media members inside the press box.

What’s Next For The Pharoahs

Egypt advances to face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the Round of 16, continuing what has already been a historic tournament run for the nation.

Australia, meanwhile, heads home after a gutsy but ultimately unsuccessful bid to reach the second round of the knockout stage.
