Duncanville High School’s football team has canceled its game against Bishop Sycamore from Ohio following accusations of Sycamore being an illegitimate team and lying to be featured on national television. The team is accused of exaggerating the talent level of its roster after its game against a team from Florida was televised on ESPN.
According to ESPN announcers, Bishop Sycamore made claims that reporters were never able to verify, such as the team has “a number of Division I prospects.” A report from the Tribune-Review in Pennsylvania also states that the team’s roster for a season-opening game against Akron’s Archbishop Hoban seemed to include several players who have already graduated high school in other states.
Due to the unanswered questions about the Ohio school’s operations and the eligibility of their student-athletes, Duncanville ISD wants to cancel their game. On Tuesday afternoon, the school informed WFA of their decision to pull out of the much-publicized game that was scheduled for Sept. 10th in Panther Stadium.
The District had also sent out a press release to address the issue. A part of the statement reads: “Duncanville Independent School District has decided to cancel the football game scheduled for Friday, Sept. 10th against Bishop Sycamore as additional information comes to light about the school’s program. There are unanswered questions about the Ohio school’s operating procedures and the eligibility of their student-athletes.”
According to Duncanville ISD, the team attempted to contact Bishop Sycamore but couldn’t reach a representative from the school.
The District further stated that the team would be seeking a new opponent as it does not have a replacement for the Ohio team.
