General Manager Curt Miller said the Dallas Wings are betting big on rookie sensation Paige Bueckers as the centerpiece of their franchise rebuild.

Miller, who was hired as the Wings’ general manager in November 2024, recently discussed the future of this franchise and said they are planning to construct the roster to help accentuate the skills of the rookie guard.

Although the Wings have struggled to find success during the 2025 WNBA season, currently sitting in third-to-last place in the league with a record of 9-24, Miller explained that the overall goals for this roster will always remain the same.

“You never like to pivot, but the goal for us is still to win,” Miller explained, per DallasHoopsJournal.

“Our team knows what we need to do. We had a goal of making the playoffs, but ultimately, firing so many young players into action going into this unprecedented free agency was important to us.”

Throughout this season, the Wings have lost almost 80 player-games to injuries, leading to the team relying heavily on many of the younger players on the roster.

Working through an injury-filled season with young players can lead to disappointing results in the win-loss column, but Miller emphasized that this experience will be vital for the team’s success in the future.

“For a long time, I wore the dual hat, and the coach in me always wanted to win. The GM in me has to think about the long term,” he said to DallasHoopsJournal.

“Now I really have to think about what the build looks like. We’ve been able to play with a very young group and get them true game-time experience and hardships. They’ll learn so much from what they’ve had to go through. You’ve got to go through hard before you can get to the other side of it.”

The centerpiece of these young players is Bueckers, who has already proven to be one of the best players in the league despite playing in her first professional season.

Bueckers has put together one of the most impressive rookie seasons in the WNBA in recent memory, averaging 18.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.3 assists while shooting 45.9% from the field.

These performances helped Bueckers make her way to the WNBA All-Star Game, with many believing that she will eventually win the WNBA Rookie of the Year award at the end of the season.

Miller further detailed how Bueckers’ breakout season has given the franchise a clear direction, noting that her ability to play in various schemes will help aid the overall roster construction.

“Paige’s efficiency and versatility give us a lot of flexibility in roster construction,” he said, per DallasHoopsJournal.

“She enjoys being off the ball and then brought back into actions, not worn down by defensive point guards pressuring her full court. She works well with a true point guard.”

Although Miller did not specify how the team will structure the roster around Bueckers, he said that the youth on this roster leaves potential for an active offseason in free agency.

“What’s not being written — and I’m surprised it isn’t — is that having that many young players in 2026 opens up so much cap space,” he said to DallasHoopsJournal.

“It positions us to be really aggressive with contract offers in this upcoming free agency. With so many lower contracts, we feel like we’re in a great spot to make strong offers.”

However, Dallas also owns three first-round picks in the coming years to help aid this rebuild, with Miller saying that these picks will be crucial in helping the Wings maintain flexibility with the salary cap.

While Dallas may struggle to pick up wins for the remainder of the 2025 season, this team has some of the most potential in the league due to the young talent.
