The Dallas Wings have acquired All-Star guard Diamond DeShields from the Phoenix Mercury as part of a four-team trade.
The Wings also receive first-round picks in 2023 and 2024 from the Chicago Sky and can swap selections with Chicago in 2025.
Chicago receives guard Marina Mabrey from Dallas and a 2024 second-round pick from Phoenix.
Phoenix gets Michaela Onyenwere from the New York Liberty, and 2024 and 2025 draft picks from Chicago.
New York adds the rights to Leonie Fiebich — an international player who has yet to play in the United States after being selected by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2020, a 2024 second-round pick from Chicago, and the option to swap first-round picks with Phoenix in 2025.
DeShields was a first-round pick of the Chicago Sky in 2018 and spent the first four years of her career with the club before being traded to Phoenix in a five-team trade last February.
She won the 2021 WNBA Championship with Chicago, was an All-Star in 2019, and has averaged at least 11 points per game in four of her five seasons as a professional.
Last season, she was one of five Phoenix players scoring double figures.
“Diamond DeShields has established herself as one of the premier wing players in the WNBA,” Dallas president and CEO Greg Bibb said in a press release after the trade was completed.
“Her size, athleticism, ability to get to the rim and defensive acumen will make us a better basketball team. She also brings a wealth of playoff experience and a WNBA Championship with her to Dallas that will ultimately aid us in our continued pursuit of a championship of our own.”
DeShields is another of many additions the Wings have made this offseason, joining Teaira McCowan, Crystal Dangerfield, Kalani Brown, Natasha Howard, and new head coach Latricia Trammell.
Mabrey spent the past three seasons with Dallas and averaged 12.7 points per game.
“We cannot wait to welcome Marina into the Chicago Sky family,” Chicago head coach and general manager James Wade remarked in a press release.
“Adding a player such as Marina who can play both guard positions, is a talented sharpshooter, and gives her all every single game will all be vital for our team this year. We are looking forward to having her as a big addition to our roster.”
The WNBA season begins in May and runs through early September. The Dallas Wings will open the season at 7 p.m. CT on May 20 against the Atlanta Dream at College Park Center in Arlington.
