Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is expected to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a partially torn hamstring that he suffered in Week 9 and is now expected to be placed on the injured reserve list.

The Cowboys have yet to officially announce that Prescott will be placed on the IR, but Executive Vice President Stephen Jones said during an appearance on 105.3 The FAN that there is “probably no way he can be back in the four-week timeframe.”

“Obviously a tough, tough situation, losing him for that period time, but we’re going to do what’s in the best interest of Dak and right now I don’t think anyone knows whether it’ll be four weeks, six weeks or the season. We’ll just have to continue to monitor that and see where it takes us,” he added, per ESPN.

Initial expectations following this injury were that Prescott would be forced to miss multiple games and could return later in the season. However, further testing revealed that the hamstring was partially torn off the bone, as NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported.

Prescott is expected to fly to New York to meet with specialists regarding potential treatment options for the injury. Still, doctors from within the Cowboys’ organization believe that surgery is required that will sideline him for four months, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Prescott recently committed to the Cowboys for the foreseeable future after signing a four-year contract extension valued at $240 million, including an NFL-record of $231 million in guarantees, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

Despite this extension, Prescott and the Cowboys have struggled through the first half of the 2024 season.

Prescott has thrown for just 1,978 yards this season with 11 passing touchdowns, though he has also thrown eight interceptions with multiple turnovers coming in the red zone through his first nine games.

The Cowboys have also struggled to collect wins through their first eight games of the season, with the team sitting at just 3-5 on the season and third in the NFC East division.

Dallas would likely have to finish the year with a record of 10-7 to compete for a wild card spot in the NFC playoffs, which has become more unlikely due to the news that Prescott will miss the remainder of the season.

The Cowboys will face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10 at 3:25 p.m., and each team will look to pick up a valuable win that will affect their seasons in vastly different ways.
