Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke about the ongoing contract discussions with quarterback Dak Prescott and was unable to confirm whether the franchise is committed to getting a deal done.

During a Friday interview with the media, Jones was asked what more Prescott could do to convince the Cowboys that he should remain the long-term answer for the team as quarterback.

Jones opened his response by praising Prescott for his work for the Cowboys since joining the team in 2016. He noted that he is a fan of Prescott and that his work ethic has separated him from many of his peers.

However, Jones further explained that many factors are involved during these negotiations and that the organization must consider the “consequences of the other side of the coin.”

“And so, Dak’s situation right now, for me, from my mirror, has more to do with our situation than it does with the merits of Dak Prescott being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys,” Jones said, according to Fox Sports.

Prescott responded to the comments made by Jones on Friday and said that he “stopped, honestly, listening to things [Jerry Jones] says to the media a long time ago.”

“It doesn’t really hold weight with me,” Prescott said, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

Prescott had the best regular season of his career during the 2023 season. He finished with 4,516 passing yards and led the league with 36 passing touchdowns and only nine interceptions.

This performance led the Cowboys to the second seed in the NFC playoffs, but they eventually lost 48-32 to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.

Although Prescott has not had the most playoff success during his time with America’s Team, accumulating an overall playoff record of just 2-5, he has still proven to be one of the most consistent players in the NFL during the first 17 games of the season.

Prescott’s abilities during the regular season could make him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history if he reaches the open market next offseason. As previously reported by The Dallas Express, reports indicate that Prescott might earn more than $60 million a year on his new contract.
