The Dallas City Council approved a multi-million dollar investment on Wednesday to help start the design process for the Dallas Wings’ new practice facility.

The council voted 12-3 on an agreement to provide $5.5 million for the design of the off-site training facility, which is expected to cost at least $48 million and be located at 1200 N. Cockrell Hill Road in West Dallas, per CBS News.

This approval process included a motion to push back the funding vote until the location was approved in two weeks, but it did not pass.

The expected site in West Dallas, which is roughly 200 acres, was donated to the city in 2007 by the Georgusis family and has sat empty for nearly 20 years, per NBC 5 DFW.

The funding approval coincides with the Wings’ eventual move to play home games at the renovated Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, which was initially set for 2026 but could be delayed until 2027.

Dallas City Council members Jesse Moreno of District 2, Cara Mendelsohn of District 12, and Paul Ridley of District 14 voted against the facility proposal, citing the lack of transparency to the public about where the facility will be located.

“You’re asking us to allocate dollars from the convention center construction fund, but we don’t know the location, and we don’t know if it is off campus,” explained Mendelsohn, as reported by Fox 4 News.

While the three council members spoke out against the proposal, the vast majority of the City Council supported the Wings’ new facility.

Council member Zarin Gracey of District 3 said that the City Council must “keep this moving” if they “are going to act and be the sports city,” per CBS.

Similarly, council member Omar Narvaez said the council must work swiftly to accomplish its goals with the Wings, noting how important it is for plans to stay on track for the 2026 season.

“If any of my colleagues think that two weeks is not a big deal, it is a big deal. Those two weeks could delay everything. The Dallas Wings have to be ready and practicing by April 2026,” he added, according to CBS.

The Wings have struggled to open the 2025 season, beginning the year with a record of just 1-4.

Despite the poor record, the Wings have incredible potential under rookie guard Paige Bueckers, who is expected to become one of the most prominent players in the league after a few seasons of development.

Now, the Wings’ eventual move to Downtown Dallas and the addition of Bueckers will allow them to improve both the roster and the organization as a whole in the coming years.
