The Dallas Cowboys announced on Saturday that cornerback Trevon Diggs will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.
Diggs is reportedly dealing with a cartilage issue in his knee and is expected to get a second opinion on the diagnosis before he commits to the season-ending knee surgery, as reported by NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
Diggs has now suffered a season-ending injury for two straight seasons, having torn his ACL during the 2024 season.
Despite playing just 11 games this season, Diggs accumulated 39 total tackles and two interceptions while often being tasked with guarding the opposing team’s top wide receiver.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said earlier this week that the team was monitoring Diggs’ minor injuries, but these comments reportedly came before Diggs suffered his season-ending injury.
“It was great to have him back out there, but I think coming off of everything he’s been through, that was a lot of football for him,” he said, per Cowboys.com.
Dallas has continued to deal with a high number of injuries suffered by the best players on the team, with the franchise now placing a total of five former Pro Bowl players being placed on injured reserve this season.
The Cowboys have now placed Diggs, Dak Prescott, Zack Martin, Demarcus Lawrence, and Daron Bland on the injured reserve list at some point, meaning the team has been without at least two major playmakers for the majority of the season.
These injuries have led the Cowboys to just 5-8 this year. The team is sitting at just third in the NFC East division and likely out of the hunt for one of the three wild card spots in the playoffs.
Dallas will now have to evaluate ways to improve the team during the upcoming offseason. Two positions on both offense and defense stand out as the team’s most important positions of need.
