Dallas Cowboys legend Tyron Smith has been working with left tackle Tyler Guyton and left guard Tyler Smith during the offseason and expects to see major growth in their development.
Smith spent the first 3 years of his NFL career with America’s Team after being selected by the organization with the ninth pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
Although Smith spent the final season of his career with the New York Jets, he signed a one-day contract to officially retire as a member of the Cowboys in April, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
Throughout his 14-year career, Smith racked up eight Pro Bowls and two All-Pro nominations, with the expectation that he will eventually be named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when eligible.
Now, Smith has spent time working with the Cowboys’ offensive line, teaching Guyton many of the tools that helped him sustain a long NFL career.
As previously reported by DX, Guyton is coming off a shaky rookie season with the Cowboys but will now have a chance to bounce back as the full-time left tackle.
Smith has a similar belief in Guyton’s ability to bounce back next season, explaining that the second-year offensive lineman “wants to put in the work” to be among the best players in the league.
“He just needs a little technique work which he’s doing right now. I feel like it’s going to be a different type of year for him to slow the game down and get the rookie nerves out. I think he’s building more confidence in his technique because he’s learning a lot more now,” he added, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
“Being a first rounder the way he is, he already has the expectations. But you can’t lean in too much on that, you have to have it for yourself. You have to want to be the best in this league, and that has to be your mentality. As an offensive lineman, we have to have the mentality of playing in this league as long as possible.”
Guyton is not the only Tyler that the Cowboys legend has been working with, as Smith has also spent time teaching left guard Tyler Smith about some of the keys to success in the NFL.
“The next step for Tyler Smith is just continuing doing what he’s doing,” he said, per FWST.
“He has the raw talent, the raw strength. He has it naturally. Even for him, slow the game more for himself to hone in more on his technique. He learned early on that you don’t have to muscle everything. You can slow the game down for yourself by honing in on your technique. That will make you last long in this league, and I think Tyler Smith learned that very early on.”
This is high praise coming from an eventual Hall of Famer, but there is still work that needs to be done on the field before it can be fully justified.
Entering the 2025 season, the Cowboys’ offensive line will be one of the most crucial pieces in determining whether this team can achieve success.
Dallas has already invested heavily across nearly every offensive position, with the offensive line standing out as the biggest X-factor for the team heading into next season.
