The Dallas Cowboys have suffered yet another blow to the offensive line as left tackle Tyler Guyton is expected to miss four to six weeks with a bone fracture and sprain in his knee.
The Cowboys wrote on their website that Guyton suffered the knee injury after he was “pushed back into some other bodies during a team period and went down awkwardly, staying on the ground for a few minutes before walking off the field under his own power alongside Micah Parsons and the team’s training staff.”
Dallas quickly began running tests on the left tackle’s knee to determine the extent of the damage, with Jon Machota writing on social media that Guyton suffered a bone fracture and sprain that will not require surgery.
Guyton had previously been working with the starting unit along the offensive line, with the expectation that he would remain as the team’s starting left tackle to open the 2025 regular season.
Cowboys writer Tommy Yarrish stated on social media that Guyton was having “one of if not his best day yet at camp” when he went down with the injury, with the second-year offensive lineman now having to work his way back during the most crucial part of the offseason.
The current timeline for this injury could allow Guyton to play in the Cowboys’ opening regular-season matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 4, which is 37 days away and would allow for just over five weeks of recovery.
Depending on Guyton’s recovery time, he could make a return to the field for this game, though the most likely scenario is that he will return in either week two or three to provide ample healing.
Although losing Guyton for this timeframe is disappointing for the Cowboys, the former first-round pick avoided a major injury following reports that the Cowboys feared he had torn his ACL.
Had he suffered a torn ACL, Guyton would have missed the entire season and would have spent the season recovering from that injury in preparation for the 2026 season.
Regardless, the loss of Guyton for the remainder of the offseason marks another significant blow for a Cowboys team that also lost offensive guard Rob Jones on Sunday, as he is expected to miss multiple months with a broken bone in his neck, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
Moving forward, Dallas will have a few different options at the left tackle position to begin the season.
The Cowboys could choose to look into free agency for potential options at the position, but the more likely outcome is that one of the team’s current linemen will step into the starting role for a few weeks before Guyton can return.
Players such as Hakeem Adeniji and Asim Richards stand out as the favorites to fill the role, as both have experience playing the tackle position to some capacity.
Another option the Cowboys could look into is moving left guard Tyler Smith to left tackle to start the season, though Dallas could also choose to keep him on the interior offensive line to keep that unit intact for the few weeks that Guyton will miss.
The good news is that Dallas does not have to make an immediate decision on what to do at this position, but a decision will have to be made in the coming weeks as the regular season inches closer.
