The Dallas Cowboys are still searching for a new head coach, and many remain split on which candidate will receive an offer from the organization.

Although current offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is considered the favorite to land the role, there are rumors that the organization will explore various options before making a decision.

Bryan Broaddus of 105.3 The FAN, a local radio station on which Cowboys owner Jerry Jones makes weekly appearances during the season, said on Thursday that Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones has a different opinion than his father.

“I think that Stephen and Jerry Jr. are trying to convince [Jerry Jones] to hire Schottenheimer, and Jerry is having some resistance. [Jerry] could step back and [agree with them],” he said, per 105.3 The FAN.

“So, there’s a little bit of a push from the sons, and Jerry is having some resentment about the potential hire. So, Jerry is going to have to do what he needs to do to maybe hold things off. I don’t know how long he can hold off his sons on this one. We’ll see.”

This report coincides with the news that former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has discussed the role with Jerry in the past. Todd Archer of ESPN described the meeting as an “informal discussion.”

Jane Slater of the NFL Network confirmed the rumors about Carroll, noting that the organization has also had discussions about Colorado Head Coach Deion Sanders and Green Bay Packers Special Teams Coordinator Rich Bissaccia.

Despite reports that Carroll had discussed the role with the Cowboys, he recently agreed to become the Las Vegas Raiders’ next head coach.

As a result of this hiring, the Cowboys have missed out on yet another impressive candidate for the role.

Dallas will now continue searching for a head coach, but many ideal candidates have already begun accepting positions with other organizations.

While Cowboys executives continue to disagree on who to hire as the team’s head coach, other organizations have been working to recruit candidates and hire their coaches.

The Chicago Bears have already signed former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, considered the best coaching candidate in this cycle, to a contract that is believed to be worth roughly $13 million annually.

The New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, and Las Vegas Raiders have also agreed to contracts with candidates, making Dallas and the New Orleans Saints the only teams still searching for a head coach.

Additionally, the San Francisco 49ers are expected to hire former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator, indicating that he is no longer an option for Dallas during this coaching cycle.

Although very few of the Cowboys’ head coaching candidates are currently searching for roles with other teams, the organization must consider moving quickly to help bring a smooth transition into the offseason.
