Callisburg comes in second in 3A state championships

The Callisburg boys’ golf team finished second in the UIL Class 3A State Golf Tournament, firing a total of 667 over the two-day event.

Callisburg was steady from start to finish, posting a 338 on the opening day and gaining ground from there.

“Callisburg boys golf, Brenden Haselip, Kaige Daughrity, JJ Walsh, Kaden Bullock, Zack Moerschell sitting in fourth place after round one of the UIL 3A state tournament,” KTenNews sports director Remi Monaghan posted on his Twitter page. “Team score of 338.”

The Wildcats came into the tournament riding high, nudging New Diana in the regional finals by a single stroke at the Oak Hurst Golf Course in Bullard.

Callisburg coach Randy Romines told the Gainesville Daily Register he was proud of the way his team kept its poise down the stretch against New Diana and felt like something good could be on tap at the state tournament.

“We knew New Diana was going to be the ones to beat and on the second day, our two sophomores JJ [Walsh] and Kaige [Daughrity] shot 37 and 38 on the front nine. The other three guys didn’t have the best front nine and then Zack [Moerschell] shot a 34 on the back nine.

Moerschell finished in third place with rounds of 82 and 76 for a total of 158. Walsh took fifth overall with his rounds of 79 and 81 for a total of 160.

The regional round win was the first for Callisburg since 2007.

“This tournament helped because we knew every shot meant something,” he added. “The guys that were in the other regions didn’t have much competition. We got a one tournament lead on the other teams with the intense pressure.”
