Indiana Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark has taken the league by storm and has now broken the WNBA rookie record for the most assists during a single season despite having more than 10 games left.
Clark found guard Lexie Hull on a fast break in a win against the Seattle Storm to officially collect her 225th assist this season and break the record for the most assists by any WNBA rookie in history.
This record was broken during a winning stretch for the Fever, which has won four of the last five games on their schedule.
Clark said that she was honored to claim the assist record and is always looking to find her teammates during fast break opportunities, noting that the fast break is a part of the game where she can “thrive the most.”
“If you’d told me I was going to lead the league in assists coming in here in my rookie season, I probably would have told you that you were lying,” she said, according to ESPN.
“But I take a lot of pride in that. I want to set my teammates up first and foremost because that’s going to help you have the most successful team,” she added.
While Clark has broken the record for assists by a rookie, she could also set the record for the most assists in a WNBA season by any player.
Clark currently sits in 10th place for the most assists in a WNBA season with a total of 232. Her eyes are set on the record of 316 assists, which was clocked by Connecticut Sun guard Alyssa Thomas last year.
The Fever have just 12 games remaining in the 2024 season, meaning that Clark would have to average 7.1 assists over the remainder of the year to break the record.
The rookie guard currently leads the entire WNBA in assists this season with an average of 8.3 through the first 28 games of the season while also putting together averages of 17.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.4 steals to lead the Fever to a record of 13-15.
