The annual Byron Nelson PGA tournament has officially named a new title sponsor, replacing longtime sponsor AT&T after a nine-year run.
Tournament officials announced earlier this week that CJ Group, a company based in South Korea with a hand in several different industries, has been chosen as its new partner.
“We are extremely grateful for the CJ Group’s long-term commitment to [the Byron Nelson golf tournament], an event which has enriched the Dallas community and carried on the legacy of Byron Nelson through world-class golf and community impact,” a statement from PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan read in the official news release.
“Alongside our partners at the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, the CJ Group is committed to further elevating the event in one of the premier golf markets in the United States.”
“Today marks a significant milestone for both the Byron Nelson golf tournament and our beneficiary, Momentous Institute,” Tim Costello, chair of Salesmanship Club Charitable Golf of Dallas Inc., the company that runs the tournament, added in the release.
“It was clear from our first meeting that CJ is dedicated to our shared commitment to strengthen mental health and education for children and families, is passionate about the game of golf and embraces the legacy of Mr. Nelson.”
AT&T had informed the PGA Tour of its intention to end its sponsorship back in May, but the company will continue to sponsor the annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am, played in California in late January.
Earlier reports initially suggested that Raytheon Technologies, an aerospace and defense company, had previously agreed to a sponsorship deal, but Commissioner Monahan appears to have scrapped the agreement.
The tournament will continue to be played at McKinney’s TPC Craig Ranch and will now be known as THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.
Reigning champion Jason Day will try to defend his title May 2-5, 2024.
