Bronny James has been released from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering a cardiac arrest at basketball practice earlier this week.
The eldest son of four-time NBA champion and 19-time NBA All-Star LeBron James is entering his freshman year at USC and collapsed during a team practice at Galen Center on Monday.
According to a family spokesperson, he was immediately treated and taken to the hospital. Early reports said that Bronny was taken to the ICU, but a statement from the hospital says he was admitted in stable condition.
“Thanks to the swift and effective response by the USC athletics’ medical staff, Bronny James was successfully treated for a sudden cardiac arrest,” the statement read.
“He arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center fully conscious, neurologically intact, and stable. Mr. James was cared for promptly by highly-trained staff and has been discharged home, where he is resting. Although his workup will be ongoing, we are hopeful for this continued progress and encouraged by his response, resilience and his family and community support.”
Bronny’s father also shared an update on his son on social media following his discharge on Thursday.
“I want to thank the countless people sending my family love and prayers,” the future Hall-of-Famer wrote. “We feel you, and I’m so grateful. Everyone doing great. We have our family together, safe and healthy, and we feel your love. Will have more to say when we’re ready, but I wanted to tell everyone how much your support has meant to all of us! #JamesGang👑”
The incident is the second in the last two summers for the USC basketball program, as three training staff members saved center Vince Iwuchukwu when he experienced a similar situation last July, an incident many are crediting for the preparedness of USC’s training staff this week.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the trainers used an automated external defibrillator, instantly allowing Iwuchukwu to regain consciousness. Iwuchukwu was taken to the hospital and even called his mom for a ride. He returned to the court in January and played in 14 games for the Trojans.
No timetable has been given on a possible return to basketball for Bronny James.
