The Detroit Pistons have decided to hire Monty Williams as their next coach, multiple media outlets reported Thursday.

The Athletic, ESPN, the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News say the former Phoenix Suns coach has agreed to a record-setting contract.

Williams will sign a six-year deal worth $78.5 million. That will exceed the $11 million the Spurs pay Coach Gregg Popovich, who is the NBA’s highest-paid coach, The Detroit News reported.

WIlliams, 51, was fired after the Suns lost in the Western Conference semifinals to the Denver Nuggets. He led the Suns to the 2021 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks.

New Suns owner Mat Ishbia took over the team late in the season and wanted changes, The Arizona Republic reported.
