The Houston Astros rallied in dramatic fashion at home on Tuesday to take the first game of five in the American League Division Series (ALDS) over the Seattle Mariners.
Yordan Alvarez’s three-run, walk-off homer helped the Astros beat the Mariners in their ALDS opener.
The Texas team trailed 7-3 after seven innings but won 8-7 following the final two frames. Alvarez had three hits, five RBIs, and two runs.
“I think it was one of the most special moments that I’ve had in my career, having my family there,” Alvarez told reporters. As for the city of Houston, he said, “They know we are a team that never gives up.”
Astro’s pitcher Justin Verlander allowed 10 hits and six runs in the first four innings of the ALDS win.
Cal Raleigh’s first-inning RBI single put the Mariners ahead 1-0. Julio Rodriguez’s second-inning double scored two more runs. Ty France’s RBI single in the same inning made it 4-0 for Seattle.
Alvarez’s third-inning RBI double scored the Astros’ first two runs.
Soon afterward, J.P. Crawford homered for the Mariners in the fourth. France later doubled in another run.
Yuli Gurriel’s fourth-inning homer cut the Astros’ deficit in half. But Eugenio Suarez’s seventh-inning homer extended the Mariners’ lead to four.
Alvarez singled in the eighth, and Alex Bregman homered to cut the Astros’ deficit to only two runs.
Going into the bottom of the 9th inning, Christian Vazquez was thrown out at first before Mariners’ relief pitcher Paul Sewald hit David Hensley with a pitch, putting him on base. Altuve struck out swinging before Jeremy Peña successfully hit a single.
At this point, the Mariners pulled Sewald and sent Robby Ray to the mound to face off against Alvarez with two outs and runners on first and second.
Alvarez fouled Ray’s first pitch before crushing the second throw for a 438 feet walk-off home run.
Overall, Gurriel was three for four with an RBI and a run. Bregman went one-for-three with two RBIs, a walk, and a run.
Mariners’ France went four for five with two RBIs. Rodriguez had two RBIs, three runs, a walk, and a strikeout.
Logan Gilbert, Mariner’s starting pitcher, allowed five hits and three runs over five-and-a-third innings.
