Texas House Rep. Mano DeAyala is running for re-election with a campaign highlighting his work on property tax relief and restricting sex alteration surgeries for minors.
DeAyala (R-Houston) has served in the Texas House since January 2023, representing House District 133.
“The last two sessions have been among the most conservative in history,” he told the Houston Chronicle earlier this month.
DeAyala cited Republican legislative victories, including funding for border security, $18 billion in property tax reductions, and restrictions on transgender procedures for minors.
The Texas Legislature passed SB 14 last year, banning sex alteration surgeries and transgender hormone usage for minors. The bill is now in the midst of a legal challenge from the ACLU and LGBTQ activist groups, as reported by DX.
DeAyala voted in support of the legislation and gained the endorsement of its co-author, Rep. Tom Oliverson (R-Cypress).
“Mano DeAyala was by my side, literally, when the Democrats were attempting to weaken and defeat my bill to end gender modification procedures for Texas children,” said Oliverson, per DeAyala’s campaign website.
DeAyala has also highlighted tax relief as one of his top priorities.
He co-sponsored legislation that provided $18 billion in property tax relief to Texans and increased homestead exemptions for homeowners in the Lone Star State.
DeAyala also said he remains committed to defending the Texas border amid the state’s ongoing conflict with the Biden administration.
“We look forward to our day in court, steadfast in upholding our fundamental right to safeguard our southern border,” he said in a recent press release. ***UPLOAD AND LINK IMAGE*** “Texas and every other state are counting on us to lead.”
“Thank you, Governor Abbott, for your unwavering dedication and leadership,” he continued. “I am committed to working with you in our ongoing battle.
In addition to issues like sex alteration surgeries, tax relief, and border security, DeAyala said he is determined to fight for “conservative” causes in the legislature and represent the interests of his constituents.
“My commitment to you and our values does not waver,” he said. “Whether it’s pushing for our principles or fighting to give West Houston a stronger voice in Austin, my record proves that I don’t just talk the talk.”
“Born and raised here, my family strives to give back to our community that has given us so much,” he continued. “I’m honored to serve as your State Representative.”
He is facing a challenger in the Republican primary: John Perez, who has been endorsed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
DeAyala voted to impeach Paxton last year. He told the Houston Chronicle he knew it would pose a risk to his re-election, but he said he stands by his decision.
“It was the right thing to do,” he said.
While Paxton endorsed his opponent, DeAyala has the support of Gov. Greg Abbott.
“From securing our border to passing the largest property tax cut in Texas history to empowering Texas parents with more rights in the education of their children, Representative Mano DeAyala has been a key ally in helping to deliver strong Republican victories as a freshman in the Texas House,” said Abbott.
The Dallas Express reached out to DeAyala to inquire about his re-election bid, but he was not immediately available for comment.
