The Dallas Police Department is seeking a person of interest in connection with the attempted robbery that left Justin Thompson fatally shot on Monday, Sept. 20.

Detective Scott Sayers, who has been working on the case all week to find evidence that might lead to arresting the killer, said he now has an image of a person of interest.

“We have a guy that we like to call a person of interest. It’s somebody that we need to find out who they are,” he said. “He broke into a car that we see on video. He walks across the street. He comes walking in this direction. He is a light-skinned Black male. He’s wearing a black t-shirt, black basketball pants with a gray stripe, and black shoes.”

Cameras in Cedar Springs caught the person of interest who Dallas police are still working to identify. Sayers said that police matched the video with people seen around the victim and witnesses around the time of the murder.

The man in the video was seen turning on Reagan Street. That location is close to Hall street, where Thompson was murdered, and where his friend was pistol-whipped. Sayers said the man was in the area just before 3 a.m. on Sept. 20, even though there was no date or time stamp on the video.

“We have video of him coming up to the crime scene at the time the offense happened, and he matches the description that was given by our witness,” Sayers said.

Dallas police are asking for the public’s help identifying the man in the video as they would like to know what he saw on the night of the crime. If you have any information on who this man is please contact Det. Sayers at 214-671-3647 or at [email protected].

Friends and associates of Thompson gathered at the Legacy of Love monument in Cedar Springs at 7 p.m. on Saturday to remember his life.
