Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of Aaron Lowe

A man was arrested by police on Oct. 3 on suspicion of the shooting death of a former West Mesquite High School football player, Aaron Lowe. As previously reported by the Dallas Express, Lowe, who was University of Utah’s defensive back before he was killed, was shot at a house party thrown hours after the Utes beat Washington State 24-13 on Sept. 26. The shooting happened just after midnight when other uninvited guests had been asked to leave.

Homicide detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department found Buk M. Buk, 22, in a city nearly 20 miles south of Salt Lake, arrested and charged him with aggravated murder, attempted murder, and felony discharge of a firearm.

It is unclear if an attorney is representing the suspect. Salt Lake City Police have also not addressed the motive of the killing. The city police chief, Mike Brown, declined to answer questions from reporters regarding the incident in a news conference on Sunday. He did inform the public that the shooting was not gang-related nor was it an attack on the university, its athletic department, or Lowe himself.

Brown expressed gratitude that detectives were able to catch the killer. “Because of the incredible work of our homicide detectives, we have justice for Aaron,” he said during the news conference.

Lowe’s death happened less than a year after his teammate Ty Jordan was killed in a shooting that police determined was accidental. Dallas Express shared in a previous article that Lowe and Jordan were classmates in West Mesquite High School. After Jordan died, Lowe, who used to be No.2 for the University of Utah’s football team, switched his jersey for No. 22 in honor of his friend.

In his first two seasons, Lowe played in sixteen combined games on special teams. He appeared in four games this season before his death.
