Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Hey, y'all. It's Sarah Zubiate Bennett. Welcome to Let's Talk Local. I'm sitting down with Texas country favorite, Wade Bowen, to talk about family, his foundation, and some of his go to spots across Texas and beyond. I then head to the State Fair of Texas for a food tour with a few of my favorite critics.
00:16
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
We've got good music, great food, and even better company. Let's get to it and make sure to follow us at let's talk local Dallas on socials to keep up with all the fun. Hi, Wood.
00:40
Wade Bowen
Hi.
00:40
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
You are a Texas treasure and I cannot thank you enough for meeting with me today before you hit the stage here at the state fair.
00:48
Wade Bowen
Yeah. Well, thanks for having me. I appreciate it.
00:51
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
No. I'm I'm grateful to be in your is this your tour bus?
00:55
Wade Bowen
It's our green room today.
00:56
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Oh, it's your green room today. Oh, There's a black one out there. Think it's Yeah. Is your bus. Well, thank you.
01:02
Wade Bowen
Yeah.
01:02
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
And I know I said that you're a Texas treasure, but you really are. Thank you. Yeah. Something that sets your music and I think persona in general apart from so many people that I've met that I know who entertain is you really seem to have a genuine and true heart for the people. And it seems like it's you're kind of moved by God almost to to touch people through your music and your actions. What first off, what took you and inspired you to to get into the music scene?
01:38
Wade Bowen
Well, you know, I grew up in a music family as far as not not players and people who did this before me, but just a mom and sisters and, you know, a dad that loved loves music. There was there was music on in the house nonstop. My mom ventured a little bit in music when she was younger and never really made anything out of it. And then my, sisters played piano and sang and did things, but, you know, they're they're they were the ones that was dragging me around. I have two older sisters and one younger one, and they were the ones dragging me around a concert.
02:13
Wade Bowen
So, you know, from like age three, you know, on to, showing me how much they love music and and so really instilled this love of music and still are, you know, to this day, my biggest fans. You know, they're they're the ones that are always so excited to come to the shows and meet other artists and they're they get starstruck easily and all that stuff. Mhmm. So that's kinda where it all started for me. And then I was kinda played sports growing up and everything, didn't really take it very seriously, but I knew that I always wanted to play music.
02:41
Wade Bowen
And then when I was about, I don't know, 17 or so, I was kinda late to the guitar world thing, and I started teaching myself guitar and started writing songs. And by the time I got, you know, 17 learning guitar and I was 18 starting a band. So it it was pretty quick. I just took off and started out in Lubbock, Texas when I was in school out there.
03:00
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Was that what was that? Eighty four something? Eighty four?
03:03
Wade Bowen
West eighty four was our band name. Yeah.
03:04
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Yes. Was that the one?
03:05
Wade Bowen
Yep. That was when we started in Lubbock,
03:07
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Okay. Texas Tech. And so now I'm sure you're really excited, with the performance of Texas Tech
03:14
Wade Bowen
these days.
03:16
Wade Bowen
Yeah. I love coach McGuire. He's an amazing amazing person. His wife Debbie too, they're great people and so glad to have them in Lubbock. And I really think they've just, put together a really great program already and I really think this year is gonna be something special.
03:31
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
I I agree with you yeah. Because I I mean, it sure seems like it's turning out to be that way. I grew up in West Texas. It's why my favorite song of yours is West Texas to yours. But anyways, I love West Texas.
03:44
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
How much time have you spent in that particular area?
03:49
Wade Bowen
Well, I grew up in Waco. Waco. So Really, my only time out there was just going to school. And then I still go back regularly, obviously, to to go to games or to play music. You know, it's still always will be one of my favorite towns, Lubbock, Texas and West Texas in general.
04:05
Wade Bowen
It's just we love it every time we go out there, Midland or Amarillo or wherever, know, San Angelo, it's all, to me, it's all West Texas and has a certain quality to it. It's just genuine and heartfelt and honest and down to earth and just good people.
04:20
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Yep. I couldn't agree more with you. It's hard. It's not hard. We love Dallas.
04:26
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
This is my home now. But coming from El Paso, it was certainly an adjustment at first to be kind of swept up in the Dallas Texas scene. But music like yours really helps to I think remind me about the nostalgic special moments that I had growing up. What is it that you do as part of your writing process for any of your songs? What is Is there some type of ritual or?
04:56
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Process?
04:58
Wade Bowen
I think everybody, every songwriter has their different techniques or whatever. I don't really have a certain way of doing things. I write when the inspiration hits or when I feel like I've gotta make a record or and I I sometimes it's melody driven, sometimes it's lyric driven, sometimes it's writing around a hook. Sometimes it's, you know, a co writer that's brought in a verse, you know, that's already already love, and we'll just kind of build off of that. I don't think I have a certain, which I kind of pride myself on not having a certain way of doing things.
05:34
Wade Bowen
I think that's I I I feel like I try very hard to be as diverse as possible with my music and my writing. So so we can write really heavy rock stuff or what I feel is heavy rocks. Probably not heavy rock to like the death metal or people of the world, but for, you know, rock stuff all the way to like really strictly country bluegrass stuff. You know, we've done it. I I like to write it all.
05:57
Wade Bowen
And we when you see our show, you see a lot of that a lot of those influences all in there. You know? So I don't really have a certain like, here's the structure of how to And ride it, you
06:09
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
again, thank you for all the stuff that you've done recently for the Camp Mystic flood victims. I know that you've called New Braunfels home for a while now. Right?
06:18
Wade Bowen
Yeah. Twenty twenty one years now.
06:21
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
And do you foresee yourself remaining in that area, that region?
06:25
Wade Bowen
Maybe. I don't know. We've we've talked about maybe moving and trying something new. Our kids are almost gone. So Oh, wow.
06:33
Wade Bowen
Maybe who knows?
06:34
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
But Got you.
06:35
Wade Bowen
I don't know. I love the hill country. I love New Braunfels and I love my hometown of Waco as well. So I'm pretty happy wherever I am.
06:44
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
So I I get that.
06:46
Wade Bowen
A good quality, I guess, to have if you're a traveling musician to just enjoy wherever you are.
06:50
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Yes. And I'm sure the people around you matter a ton as well.
06:54
Wade Bowen
Yeah, for sure.
06:55
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Yeah. To have that kind of home with you at all times. You should look at Athens, Texas. Our ranch is out in Athens, Texas and it's a beautiful hilly area of Texas. It's a little more remote, but it's just really special.
07:10
Wade Bowen
The older I get, the more remote sounds better, right? Oh my gosh.
07:13
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Yes, yes, it really does. We had Willie and Luke Nelson play out there a few years ago now. But I'm interested, what kind of events fulfill you the most? Because you do a lot.
07:30
Wade Bowen
Yeah. I mean, I don't know. There's I don't think there's one in particular. I just the events are all different. Live shows are all different every night.
07:38
Wade Bowen
The, you know, the beauty of live shows. Right? That's that's they're all they're all different. So as far as charity events, I mean, we we have a foundation called the Bowen Family Foundation that we do. So I would lean to those being my favorite kinds of events.
07:53
Wade Bowen
But we've thrown everything from big massive festivals to small tiny events to we just did a golf tournament, here recently, we raised, you know, 1,200,000.0 for that. I mean, just in a golf tournament. So those are the things that are a lot of fun for us, but at the same time, you're getting a lot done too. So as long as we're doing something, giving back, those those events are really fun for me.
08:15
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
That's beautiful. And I'm sure with your children kind of being out of the house at this point, like you'd mentioned, I'm sure that's exceptionally fulfilling. Have they have they been involved in the foundation or any of your work?
08:30
Wade Bowen
No, not the kids yet. You know, they're they're still doing their thing. So, my youngest one's still in high school, so he's still focusing on that. The other one's in college. So they they're they're they got their own things working on.
08:42
Wade Bowen
They don't need more stuff from dad, you know?
08:44
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
I get that.
08:45
Wade Bowen
But my family's really involved. My sister my little sister runs the foundation for me. And like I said, mom, dad, sisters, wife, they're all involved in some you know, within the events, we got cousins involved. We got uncles involved. We have, you know, everything.
09:02
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
That's beautiful to hear. My last kind of token that I really wanna pull from you. We live in a super divisive world. There's been a lot of pain, heartache. Yeah, just evil kind of looming everywhere it seems. What is it that you hope your music to leave will leave future generations?
09:29
Wade Bowen
I don't know. I really try not to think about that. I just I think I'm such an in the moment artist. I try really hard to be passionate about every decision I make, every choice of song, everything I put on records, every everything we do, I try to be very, I want people to look back and go, he was he was very passionate about his music. He really, did things with the utmost class and, you know, really left a mark that way.
10:00
Wade Bowen
Let you know, a work ethic maybe or, just a way to write songs or, hey, maybe just try to take it a little more seriously, you know, you're leaving a mark with your songs. So as an artist, it's that's what I try to instill to younger people when they ask me, you know, what's some advice? I just say, hey, like, make sure it's it's, you know, it's not half assed, you know, make sure it's it's good and make sure it's something that can you don't have to change the world with every single song, obviously, but but you wanna you wanna leave a mark somehow.
10:30
Wade Bowen
That's what I feel like, you know, when I look back on my career and my life, you know, that that would be that would be nice. Other than that, I don't I don't know. I don't really think about it much other than that.
10:41
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
That's good. Because I think as an artist, you and as a creator, you I would almost hope that you wouldn't Yeah. Get too deep into it because then your talent I think would show that a little bit. But you're you're it's so uplifting. So many of your songs.
11:01
Wade Bowen
Well, for me, it's like what's going on in my life at the time or what kind of record am I making at the time? It's not really thinking about the future as much, you know, just capturing what's going on there. Because I'm a pretty open diary style songwriter and always kinda have been. Yeah. Probably definitely not the most open diary.
11:15
Wade Bowen
There's a lot lot of people who write a more a lot more intimate stuff than I do, but but I try to be really open and honest with it at the time and just see what happens with it. And I usually write a lot of songs for every project and then just kind of dig through them all and see where my head is and what what kind of record I wanna make with it. And so hopefully that leaves an impact.
11:35
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Yeah. And you yeah, it is. You're already leaving a huge impact. Who are some of your favorite artists to collaborate with?
11:42
Wade Bowen
Collaborate. Well, I mean, obviously Randy Rogers, he and I do the whole my beer stuff. Uh-huh. My brother-in-law, Cody Canada, you know, he he and I, have done a few things through the years, but I love playing shows with him and singing songs with him. He's one of my favorite people ever.
12:00
Wade Bowen
I I don't know. I love, we just, you know, had a lot of buddies at the charity event. We had Parker McCollum, I love him, Co Wetzel, and Yep. William Clark Green. And, you know, we do some stuff in case Donahue.
12:13
Wade Bowen
I don't know. I got a lot of good friends in this business that I'm really proud of, and I'm proud of what they're doing. I'm proud of who they are as men. And Mhmm. Just Cody Johnson, you know, we collaborated here recently.
12:25
Wade Bowen
And one of my favorite singers ever, Miranda Lambert. Love her to death. Miranda. Oh She's probably my favorite voice, female voice for sure. So, we've done some things together.
12:37
Wade Bowen
I'd love to do more with her, but there's a long list because I love music and love my friends. And and I'm I'm a I'm a I tell everybody I'm a fan first of music. So being around any of those people I mentioned and a million others that I left out, I love I love being a part of the scene for sure.
12:55
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
And how can someone or a family or a donor, how can people donate to your foundation? How can they become involved with what it is that you do? Because so many people love what you represent.
13:08
Wade Bowen
Yeah. We we have you can just search Bowen Family Foundation or go to the website, bowenfamilyfoundation.org. It's it's on there and has all the information. We just hit as a foundation, we just hit 8,000,000 total that we've raised since we started. So it's not a a BS thing.
13:25
Wade Bowen
It's it's legit and fun and, very rewarding and we love doing it. And it's a huge part of of who I am and what what I do as an artist.
13:34
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
And is it primarily children's causes that the foundation donates to?
13:38
Wade Bowen
Children and families. We do very broad because we wanna help, you know, we average around 20 to 25 different charities a year that we are able to give to based off the submissions that we get. And so we just try to make sure as long as it involves children or families, we wanna help as many as possible.
13:55
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
That's wonderful. What are your favorite venues to perform at across Texas?
14:02
Wade Bowen
Yes. Billy Bob's Yes. Whitewater, Amphitheater in New Braunfels, and I don't know. There's a lot of them. There are.
14:17
Wade Bowen
I love Gruene Hall too. It's kind of in the backyard of both of them.
14:22
Wade Bowen
As far as Texas is concerned, I don't know. I mean, we played, we've played, there's so many beautiful places in Texas, like the Moody Center, the Moody Amp that we played last night, all of those new Moody, naming them all the same dang thing. It's confusing. But the Moody's in Austin are a great, great group of venues as well, depending on what kind of show we're doing. I don't know.
14:46
Wade Bowen
But that's there's Cook's Cook's Garage and the blue light is my hometown my my home place. And the, you know, blue light is like the songwriter place. It's like holds, like, three fifty or something. It's like a small place. But Okay.
14:57
Wade Bowen
The Cook's Garage in Lubbock does a great job too. They got a beautiful venue out there. So there's a lot of great places. I hate to start naming them because then I feel like I'm favoring them.
15:04
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
No. I know. I
15:05
Wade Bowen
get it. I get it.
15:07
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
But I love that.
15:07
Wade Bowen
Billy Bob's, I think, definitely takes the cake for me. They're just, you know, with Robert Gallagher there and Marty and all them, they're just amazing people and treat us like family and they just know what they're doing. They've been doing it long enough to know how to do it right.
15:21
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
And what about across The United States?
15:23
Wade Bowen
What I love the Ryman. I love Red Rocks. Those are those are my two that immediately pop in my head when people ask where, you know, where's your favorite place to play? I love Key West when we play there. Oh It's a fun festival, but, I think Red Rocks And The Ryman in Nashville really take the cake.
15:42
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Okay. And what is some of your favorite I guess what are some of your favorite stops in the DFW area whenever you're here?
15:52
Wade Bowen
Oh gosh. I don't know. Like restaurants or what?
15:58
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Anything. I mean, if
15:59
Wade Bowen
I you I don't feel like I have time for anything right now.
16:01
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Except for performing.
16:03
Wade Bowen
Drawing a blank other than playing the shows. You know?
16:05
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
I get it.
16:07
Wade Bowen
I don't really know. You know, it's just a matter of, like, I've got my son here 's at University of Dallas.
16:12
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
You. Okay. Didn't know that.
16:13
Wade Bowen
And which is in Irving, you know? So Yes. Usually everything revolves around trying to be able to see him when I'm in town. Right? He's coming over to the show tonight actually.
16:24
Wade Bowen
So bringing some friends. So that's usually my priority and then getting back to the show. That's kind of my the only thing I think of a DFW right now is that. And then, you know, I'll be going to the Cowboys game Sunday.
16:37
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Got you.
16:37
Wade Bowen
That's fun. You know, things like that. I I love DFW, you know, so much. I love this area. I love Fort Worth, especially.
16:46
Wade Bowen
We we, you know, my wife and I have always said, like, maybe if not living in New Braunfels, we might live in Fort Worth, but it's a beautiful beautiful area. I love it up here. So much to do, so many great places and it's just a great place to be and play music. I love that.
17:01
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
I love that. I hope to one day, have you come play out at our ranch, whenever we have events and stuff. Yeah. Because That's we love your music. What is the easiest way to book you all and how far in advance do you book?
17:15
Wade Bowen
It all depends.
17:16
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
All depends. Yeah.
17:17
Wade Bowen
We're we're with CAA out of other offices all over the world. But CAA is our booking agency, and all that info is on our website and all of our socials as well.
17:26
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
So Cool.
17:27
Wade Bowen
Easiest way to find anything out about us is on our socials because we're real active on there and, very responsive even on direct messages.
17:36
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
And do you have any last words that you want to leave with our viewers and our listeners on this particular show? We're top 1% in Texas, so real happy about that. Nice.
17:47
Wade Bowen
I, you know, I just, State Fair in Texas is an honor to play here. I know what it means to be on the stage and and, to be in this this is a beautiful market. This is an area, you know, this whole these cities around here just, you know, even they've really, really helped me thrive in my career and really been a massive part, if not the biggest part of of of the money that I make and the memories I have and everything I've really built in my life really revolves around the DFW area in general. So I just wanna say thanks to everybody that's come out to shows and then, you know, given me a career for so many years. It it really means a lot, and I love this area, and we're we're glad to be back.
18:27
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Well, we love you. We love having you. We love your concerts. And, yep, thank you for being here.
18:34
Wade Bowen
Thank you. Thanks for having me. Thank you.
19:12
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Jack wants to do one, five, and nine.
19:16
Liliana

19:20

19:29
Louis

19:37
Liliana
Yeah. 4 looks good.
19:39
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
And 3. I bet. Feels okay. Maybe
19:43
Liliana
just small. Yeah. Maybe just small. Okay. Well, this is be kind of hard.
19:46
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Where are we located right now, Shanon? Where is this?
19:49
Shanon
If you turn the map around, we are currently right here.
19:56
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Okay. Briscoe carpenter livestock. So then You said the majority of them are at the food court?
20:05
Shanon
Yeah. That's where so yeah. That's there. K. And then several of them are here on the midway.
20:12
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Okay. So then since since you both are state fair season ticket holders, Shannon and Shay, would you guys like to be the guide?
20:22
Shae
Where you need to go. Okay. Let's do it. Let's okay.
20:29
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
We're gonna see a pig and then we're going to go get food.
20:32
Liliana
Aw, so cute.
20:34
Sawyer
He's a thousand pounds. Twin, where have you been? It's so big. Twin, where have you been?
20:45
Margot
Twin, Oh my goodness. So cute. Look how adorable this is. I love it. Look at that.
20:53
Sawyer
That pig's massive. He weighs a thousand pounds. His name's Boris.
20:58
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Do Do it. It.
20:59
Liliana
Okay. This looks so good.
21:01
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
So this is number one, Margo and Lily. Margo, ahead and get that side.
21:05
Liliana
Lily, by
21:07
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
you take your rubber bands out.
21:13
Liliana
So good.
21:14
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
It's good? Get their expressions. Do you like it? Mhmm. Do you think it deserves it's it's deserving of the number one spot on the Big Tex winners food item?
21:26
Liliana
Cheesy, and the pretzel's really soft and good. Yeah. The brisket. The brisket is so good.
21:32
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
The brisket is good? What do you say, Jack?
21:35
Liliana
It's not number one that's good.
21:37
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Not a number one.
21:38
Liliana
Okay. Yeah. Don't. Put that.
21:42
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Oh, you haven't eaten it. Okay.
21:44
Liliana
I have one.
21:45
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Oh, you do have one? Sorry.
21:46
Liliana
I don't have any There's no more, so I don't know yet. Okay.
21:53
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
Lily? Yeah.
21:57
Liliana
Is there four people?
21:58
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
No. Just use your hands. And we apparently have no napkins. Okay. So everyone liked it?
22:08
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
You liked it? You have a bunch of yeses? Yes? Good. Okay.
22:14
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
I think his face says it all. With the cheese. Soy sauce. Hi. How big are your deep fried brownies?
22:27
Liliana
They're oh, they're deep fried Oreo.
22:31
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
They don't have deep fried Oreos, don't think. Oh, they're little. Oh, there's three of them. Perfect. Okay.
22:38
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
May we have two orders of those? No. No ice cream because we're about to go get some ice cream.
22:49
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
And then your your pickle, does it have more pickle juice in it? Yeah. It's no. May I have one? Thank you.
23:04
Sarah Zubiate Bennett
