A new North Texas facility will be the first of its kind in the country in 20 years and will bring thousands of jobs to the area.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that a new GlobiTech Inc. facility will be opened in Sherman, Texas. GlobiTech serves the semiconductor industry, providing silicon epitaxy services and products, North Texas e-News reported.
In the announcement, Gov. Abbott shared that Texas continues to bring technological innovations and top manufacturers to the area.
Providing more specific details, the governor explained, “GlobiTech’s ongoing partnership with the City of Sherman will create more than a thousand new jobs for the region and invest billions of dollars into our state’s economy.”
Funded in part by a $15 million Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) grant, the new facility will create an estimated 1,500 jobs and generate billions in investment. GlobiTech — a subsidiary of the GlobalWafers corporation based in Taiwan — will also receive a Veteran Created Job Bonus of $10,000.
David Plyler, the mayor of Sherman, said the City has been preparing to support bigger corporations like GlobiTech by creating a more business-friendly environment over the past several years.
“This project will provide profound benefits for our citizens, our city, and Grayson County for decades to come,” Plyler said.
Plyler explained that the state-of-the-art semiconductor silicon facility “will meet a critical industry need” and cement Sherman’s status “as a center of high-tech manufacturing–not only in Texas but across the country.”
Gov. Abbott added that the company’s expanded presence in the Lone Star State “will boost Texas’ global position in the semiconductor industry amid a worldwide chip shortage.”
According to Mark England, the GlobiTech president, the new facility and investment in his hometown of Sherman will be the first of its kind built in the country in over two decades.
“Advanced 300-millimeter silicon wafers are currently manufactured in Asia, forcing the U.S. semiconductor industry to rely on imported silicon wafers,” he explained.
State Representative Reggie Smith echoed the belief that the facility would help alleviate these problems.
“With the current supply chain issues and chip shortages, I am excited to have GlobiTech expand their operations in Sherman.”
In response to the announcement of the future site of the GlobiTech facility, a recently opened location of 903 Brewers will move right across the road, KXII reported.
Jeremey Roberts, a brewer and the founder of 903 Brewers, said the company would sell the land where they presently sit to the City and purchase the 10 acres across the street from the facility. The brewery will also be reimbursed for the money already spent on its current location, Roberts told KXII.
