Utz Quality Foods LLC has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of several Zapp’s and Dirty potato chip products because a seasoning ingredient may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall affects a limited number of varieties of flavored potato chips sold in retail stores across the United States. The products include select Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch, Salt and Vinegar, and Big Cheezy chips, as well as Dirty brand Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream and Onion chips.

Utz said the recall was initiated after the company was notified that a seasoning containing dry milk powder sourced from California Dairies Inc. and supplied by a third-party vendor “may contain the presence of Salmonella.”

Although the seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella before being used in production, the company said it decided to recall the products “out of an abundance of caution.”

Utz said it had not received any complaints of illness linked to the recalled potato chips, but it issued the recall based on the ingredient supplier’s recall.

The recall involving dry milk powder from California Dairies has also impacted other food companies. Ghirardelli previously recalled select powdered beverage mixes, including some frappé and hot cocoa products, while John B. Sanfilippo & Son issued recalls for certain snack mix products linked to the potentially contaminated ingredient.

Salmonella can cause serious infections, particularly in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and lead to more severe illnesses.

The recall includes nine product varieties with specific UPCs, batch codes, and best-by dates ranging from July 27, 2026, through August 31, 2026.

Affected products include:

  • Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips in 1.5-ounce, 2.5-ounce, and 8-ounce bags
  • Zapp’s Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips in 1.5-ounce bags
  • Zapp’s Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chips in 2.5-ounce and 8-ounce bags
  • Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips in 2-ounce bags
  • Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chips in 2-ounce bags
  • Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips in 2-ounce bags

Utz said no other products manufactured by the company are part of the recall.

Consumers are being advised not to eat the recalled chips and to discard them. Retailers have also been instructed to remove the affected products from shelves and inventory.

Customers seeking refunds or additional information can contact Utz Customer Care at 1-877-423-0149 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern time.
