Why Elon Musk Calls Optimus His ‘Biggest Product Ever’ – Production Starts Soon

Tesla is preparing to begin production of its Optimus humanoid robot at the Fremont factory this summer, converting former Model S and Model X assembly lines for the new platform.

CEO Elon Musk has described the Optimus Humanoid Robot as potentially the “biggest product ever,” with ambitions for millions of units capable of performing household chores, factory work, and assisting with elder care.

A recent X post by Tesla investor account @Teslaconomics noted the robot’s envisioned role, stating, “Optimus be the greatest product EVER created. It will be the first tool that can physically help us with almost anything… imagine having a robot that can cook dinner, clean the house, carry groceries, help care for elderly family members, assist people with disabilities, work dangerous jobs…”

The July 1, 2026, post, which included a collage of conceptual images depicting Optimus in everyday scenarios, has drawn significant engagement.

Production Timeline and Capabilities

According to updates from Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call and subsequent statements, pilot production of Optimus is slated to start in late July or August 2026 at Fremont, with a second factory planned for Giga Texas. Initial output will focus on simple factory tasks before expanding.

Prior videos have demonstrated prototypes performing tasks such as cooking, cleaning, vacuuming, folding clothes, and basic mobility. Musk described scenarios where Optimus could handle repetitive or hazardous work.

Tesla targets a long-term consumer price of $20,000 to $30,000 per unit. Analyst projections cited in reports estimate initial 2026 production in the tens of thousands, scaling higher in subsequent years.

Implications for Labor, Households, and Global Markets

For Americans, companies see potential in addressing labor shortages in manufacturing, warehousing, construction, and elder care. An aging population has increased demand for in-home assistance; demographers project millions more seniors living alone in coming decades. Optimus is positioned to support tasks like household chores and caregiving.

Technical hurdles remain, including reliable performance across varied real-world environments, safety protocols, and integration with existing infrastructure, reported The Street. Musk has acknowledged timelines can shift, with full capabilities building gradually.

Privacy concerns arise from robots equipped with cameras and connectivity. Regulatory frameworks for autonomous systems in homes and workplaces are still evolving.

On personal relationships, discussions in tech circles note that while robots could reduce isolation for some through assistance and companionship tasks, they may alter family dynamics or human interactions in caregiving roles. No widespread deployment has occurred yet to measure long-term effects.

What’s Next

Tesla plans a Gen 3 reveal around mid-2026, aligned with production startup. Further demonstrations of advanced dexterity and task execution are expected. External sales could begin in the second half of 2026 or 2027, pending progress.
