Federal and media reports have identified the gunman in the Ice Facility Shooting Dallas as Joshua Jahn, 29, who opened fire on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) transport van on Wednesday morning before killing himself.
The attack left two detainees dead and one critically wounded, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Officials said Jahn fired from a rooftop overlooking the sallyport of the ICE Dallas field office as detainees were being transferred into the building.
Timeline of the Attack
DHS reported the shooting occurred shortly after 7 a.m. CT, but an eyewitness told NBC News she heard rapid gunfire closer to 6:10 a.m. while waiting in a vehicle outside the facility. Law enforcement said Jahn used a rifle and fired multiple rounds before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound as authorities closed in.
Anti-ICE Messaging
Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that a stripper clip of ammunition found near Jahn’s body was scrawled with “Anti-ICE.” FBI Director Kash Patel also posted an image of engraved unspent shell casings and called the shooting an “ideologically motivated” act of targeted violence. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem described it as a “vile attack motivated by hatred for ICE,” warning that leftist rhetoric demonizing immigration enforcement has “very real consequences.”
Reports indicate that Jahn’s Facebook page has been deleted. However, social media posts, including those of Laura Loomer, indicate that John’s Facebook profile showed Antifa and communist symbols, featuring a photo of an armed figure with a hammer and sickle and the phrase “GLORIOUS EXPOSITION, COMRADE.” This information has not been independently verified by The Dallas Express.

Shooter’s Vehicle
Investigators also located Jahn’s blue Toyota Corolla near the ICE facility. The car had a printed map of radioactive fallout across the United States taped to the rear quarter panel. According to Fox 4 News Dallas, the text above the map read: “Radioactive fallout from nuclear detonations have passed over these areas more than 2x since 1951.” The image was traced to Richard Miller’s book Under the Cloud: The Decades of Nuclear Testing.
Criminal History
Court records confirm Jahn was arrested in Collin County, Texas, in 2016 on a felony charge of delivering marijuana greater than one-quarter ounce and less than five pounds. He pled guilty and received five years of deferred adjudication probation, along with fines and restitution.
Voter History
The outlet Current Revolt reported that voting records show Jahn participated in the 2020 Democratic primary. The Dallas Express has not independently verified this information.
Family Response
Jahn’s brother, Noah, told NBC News he did not believe his sibling held strong political views. “He didn’t have strong feelings about ICE as far as I knew,” Noah said. “He wasn’t interested in politics on either side as far as I knew.” He added that while their parents owned a rifle, Jahn was “not a marksman” and “would not be able to make any shots like that.”
Broader Pattern
Wednesday’s shooting marks at least the third attack on ICE or Customs and Border Protection facilities in Texas since July. DHS recently reported a 1,000% increase in assaults on ICE officers in recent years. Last month, the same Dallas ICE facility was targeted with a bomb threat, and earlier this summer, suspects were charged after a July 4 ambush on an ICE detention center in Alvarado.
Texas leaders, including Attorney General Ken Paxton, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, and Gov. Greg Abbott, condemned the Dallas shooting and urged an end to rhetoric that vilifies immigration enforcement.
Political Fallout
Vice President JD Vance directly blamed Democrat leaders for what he called rhetoric that encourages violence against immigration officers.
“The very people who keep us safe ought to be honored and protected and praised by Democrats and Republicans alike. It is time to stop the rhetorical assault on law enforcement,” Vance said.
“When Democrats like Gavin Newsom … say that these people are ‘part of an authoritarian government’ … what they’re doing is encouraging crazy people to go and commit violence against our law enforcement.”
“If your political rhetoric encourages violence against our law enforcement, you can go straight to hell, and you have no place in the political conversation of the United States of America.”
