Walmart announced plans to eliminate the use of synthetic dyes in private food brands by January 2027, citing customer preferences as the biggest reason for the change.
Walmart announced the change in a news release, stating that synthetic dyes, along with 30 other ingredients used in private-label food products, will be removed in an effort to meet growing customer demands regarding ingredient transparency.
Moving forward, brands such as Great Value, Marketside, and Freshness Guaranteed will all experience the change, though it remains to be seen how many brands will be affected.
The company further cited a customer survey in which 62% of customers stated that they wanted more transparency, with 54% of these respondents also indicating that they check the ingredients of the food they purchase.
Walmart stated that many of these changes will be implemented in the coming months, with January 2027 being the latest date for certain brands to be updated, as private brand suppliers work to determine which ingredients and alternatives need to be swapped.
John Furner, president and CEO, Walmart U.S., stated that customers “want products made with simpler, more familiar ingredients,” and the company is now making a “promise to deliver affordable food that families can feel good about.”
“This commitment demonstrates how Walmart is responding to changing customer preferences, while also setting the standard for providing exceptional quality and innovation at an outstanding value.”
