Volkswagen is recalling more than 43,800 ID.4 electric SUVs due to a high-voltage battery issue that could overheat and cause a fire, increasing the risk of injury.

The action affects model-year 2023-25 ID.4s built from September 2, 2022, to April 10, 2025. An estimated 1% of individuals may have the defect, with 43,881 potentially affected. In rare cases, battery modules may experience thermal propagation, possibly resulting in a vehicle fire.

The root cause remains undetermined following joint analysis with the supplier, despite extensive review of cell module and vehicle data. Deviations at the battery module supplier may lead to self-discharge. Owners might notice a loss of range or performance as a warning.

Dealers will perform a free battery health check, update the high-voltage battery management controller software to include self-discharge detection, and replace affected cell modules as needed based on the inspection or software alerts.

Vehicles outside the recall already have the detection software. For 82kWh batteries, updated software was installed starting January 17, 2024; 62kWh production ended before the change.

Owner letters are slated for mailing on March 20. Contact Volkswagen at 800-893-5298 (recall number 93EA), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236, or check vehicle identification numbers on its website.

The recall follows investigations into thermal events in 2024 and 2025, where the origin was traced to the battery. Dealer notification was planned for January 23, 2026. No reimbursement is offered, as the vehicles are under a new-vehicle limited warranty.

Separately, 670 model-year 2023-24 ID.4s were recalled in January over misaligned electrodes that increased the risk of fire. Another 311 was recalled in December last year for a similar issue.
