The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Thursday that UPPAbaby is recalling thousands of its jogging strollers after a child’s finger was lacerated by a stroller’s braking component, resulting in fingertip amputation.

The specific stroller being recalled is UPPAbaby’s all-terrain RIDGE jogging stroller, which is manufactured in China, according to the CPSC.

The recall affects models with the serial number beginning with 1401RDGUS, roughly 14,400 strollers. The serial numbers can be found on the right side of the stroller above the rear wheel.

The strollers have openings in the rear disc brakes, which caught the fingers of a child who was not seated in the stroller. Part of the child’s fingertip was consequently amputated.

So far, only one incident involving fingertip amputation has been reported.
According to NBC News, UPPAbaby is considered a premiere stroller brand. Some of their strollers cost more than $1,000.
The Massachusetts-based stroller and car seat company stated that they believe the incident likely occurred due to “consumer misuse.”
The company wrote in a statement, “We conduct extensive testing to ensure UPPAbaby products meet all global industry and regulatory standards. Despite passing all tests and meeting all standards, UPPAbaby received one report about the all-terrain RIDGE stroller. Based on one consumer report to us, we believe the injury is likely due to consumer misuse.”
Still, the CPSC stated that owners of the product should immediately cease using them and contact the company to “receive free replacement brake discs for both wheels.”

The strollers were sold at children’s specialty stores, Amazon, BuyBuyBaby, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Pottery Barn Kids, for roughly $600 since October 2021.
