President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Wednesday aimed at preventing “transgender athletes” from competing in women’s and girls’ athletic events.

This decision, announced just weeks into his presidency, is not his first regarding such issues and aims to keep his pledge of ending the “transgender insanity.”

President Trump is set to sign an executive order called “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” according to a White House official, reported CNN.

The order will be formally signed during a ceremony at 3 p.m. ET on February 5, coinciding with National Girls and Women in Sports Day, reported Fox 4 KDFW.

What does the order entail? It will address how the Trump administration plans to interpret Title IX, a vital law known for promoting gender equity in sports and tackling sexual harassment on college campuses.

According to U.S. Representative Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, “This executive order restores fairness, upholds Title IX’s original intent, and defends the rights of female athletes who have worked their whole lives to compete at the highest levels,” per Fox.

Each presidential administration can interpret Title IX differently.

During Trump’s first term, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos issued a policy in 2020 that tightened the definition of sexual harassment and limited the circumstances under which colleges were required to investigate claims.

The Biden administration reversed this policy last April, providing federal protections for LGBTQ+ students while leaving the issue of “transgender athletes” largely unaddressed. This has led to several Republican-led states filing lawsuits against the new regulations.

On Trump’s first day in office as the 47th President, he issued a sweeping directive to define sex solely as male or female for federal documentation, including passports and prison assignments.

This pledge to “keep men out of women’s sports” resonated with many voters across the political spectrum, with recent polls indicating that over half of those surveyed feel support for “transgender rights” has exceeded reasonable bounds.

“If you’re going to have women’s sports, if you’re going to provide opportunities for women, then they have to be equally safe, equally fair, and equally private opportunities, and so that means that you’re going to preserve women’s sports for women,” per the Trump administration, reported CNN.
