Twitter’s board of directors revealed on Monday that it had agreed in principle to approve a sale of the company for $44 billion to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, leading many to question whether former President Donald Trump would be re-invited to the platform.
Trump’s Twitter account, which had been used for years to voice his opinions was suspended by the platform in early 2021. The action was due to the January 6 protests where Trump supporters expressed their displeasure with the 2020 election.
When Fox News asked Trump if he would consider returning to Twitter after the Musk takeover, Trump stated he would not be doing so at this time, preferring to remain on the social media website, TRUTH Social, where he plans to begin posting within the next week.
“I am not going on Twitter. I am going to stay on TRUTH,” said Trump. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it, and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH.”
He continued, “We’re taking in millions of people, and what we’re finding is that the response on TRUTH is much better than being on Twitter. Twitter has bots and fake accounts, and we are doing everything we can. The bottom line is, no, I am not going back to Twitter.”
At the time of his Twitter suspension, President Trump had one of the largest accounts on the platform, with 88 million followers. Each of his posts received thousands of likes, retweets, and comments.
Regarding that following, President Trump has stated, “TRUTH Social will be a voice for me, and that’s something nobody else can get.”
“Go out and sign up now,” he urged his supporters. “Have a lot of fun.”
