President Donald Trump announced a major reset of federal fuel economy standards on Wednesday, rolling back Biden-era regulations that would have pushed automakers toward electric vehicles.

The move will save American families an average of $1,000 per new car purchase, the White House said. The policy reversal represents Trump’s latest effort to combat what he calls “hidden cost-of-living increases” from the previous administration. His reset of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards marks a significant victory for traditional automakers struggling to meet aggressive EV targets.

The Biden administration’s stringent fuel economy requirements were “impossible to meet with available technologies for gas cars,” according to the White House fact sheet. These standards effectively forced manufacturers to shift production toward expensive electric vehicles.

Under the previous rules, automakers faced a costly dilemma. They had to sell EVs at a loss while raising prices on gas-powered vehicles to offset those losses, according to the White House press release.

Trump’s reset will save consumers $109 billion over five years, the administration projects. The changes could also prevent 1,500 deaths and nearly 250,000 serious injuries through 2050 by making newer, safer vehicles more affordable.

The president has systematically dismantled EV-related policies since taking office. In June, he signed legislation ending California’s electric-vehicle mandates, which would have banned the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035.

July brought the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, setting CAFE violation penalties to zero. This protected U.S. auto manufacturers from substantial fines for missing fuel economy targets.

The Environmental Protection Agency has also proposed rescinding the 2009 Endangerment Finding under Trump’s direction. That Obama-era determination has justified over $1 trillion in regulatory costs, the administration claims.

Wednesday’s announcement ensures fuel economy standards remain achievable with conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles. The Trump Administration argues this approach better aligns with congressional intent when lawmakers created the CAFE program.

Combined with new tax deductions for interest on auto loans for American-made vehicles, the reset aims to make car ownership more accessible. The policy particularly benefits middle-class families facing affordability challenges in the current market.
