President Donald Trump proclaimed Sunday, September 27, 2026, as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, honoring families who lost loved ones in military service.
The September 25 proclamation calls on government officials to fly the U.S. flag over government buildings and encourages Americans to display flags and hold ceremonies in recognition of those families’ sacrifices.
Support for surviving families
Trump recognized the grief Gold Star families carry and the work many undertake to support other military families and veterans after losing a loved one.
The proclamation also highlights the Military Spouse Commission, which Trump established through an August 3 executive order. The commission advises him on issues affecting military spouses and families, including housing, employment, health care and deployment support.
Its members bring more than 544 years of combined military family experience and are working with the Department of War’s Gold Star Advisory Council, according to the proclamation.
Trump pledged continued support for surviving families and joined the first lady in expressing gratitude for Americans whose loved ones gave their lives in service.
A tradition of remembrance
Congress designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day through a June 23, 1936, resolution.
The Gold Star tradition dates to World War I, when families displayed service flags with blue stars representing loved ones in the armed forces. A gold star replaced the blue star when a service member died, according to the Army.
North Texas remembrance efforts include Carry The Load’s Dallas Memorial March at Reverchon Park, part of the region’s Memorial Day observances, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
