President Donald Trump announced Tuesday on Truth Social that he is designating Antifa as a “major terrorist organization” and urged investigations into its alleged financial backers.
The announcement follows the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. As The Dallas Express has reported, the accused shooter, Tyler James Robinson, allegedly engraved the title of a song associated with leftist and antifascist movements on bullets recovered after the attack — a sign of ideological alignment. Federal investigators have also uncovered writings and digital traces tying Robinson to Antifa-style extremism.
DX Investigations Into Antifa
The Dallas Express has previously documented Antifa-linked operations in North Texas, including:
- A lawsuit unmasking Antifa’s decentralized Dallas–Fort Worth structure, naming organizers and detailing encrypted communications and online fundraising streams (DX report)
- Benjamin Song’s admission of “radical-left motives” in an ICE detention facility ambush, with ties to the militant Elm Fork John Brown Gun Club (JBGC) (DX report)
- A July raid near Deep Ellum that seized more than 40 firearms and socialist propaganda from Antifa-aligned members (DX report)
- The re-arrest of an Antifa-linked activist after violating release conditions in an ICE agent knife attack (DX report)
- FBI capture of Benjamin Song in connection with the July 4 ambush plot on the Prairieland ICE detention facility near Fort Worth. Song allegedly purchased four firearms used in the attack, and was arrested with multiple weapons. Doctrine includes use of encrypted messaging (Signal), maps marking ICE facility and six nearby police stations, and suspects found with anarchist/socialist propaganda. (DX report)
These incidents reflect a documented pattern of violent and extremist behavior tied to Antifa networks in Texas.
Legal and Political Questions
While Trump’s move drew praise from Republican lawmakers, legal experts have pointed out that U.S. law provides no formal mechanism for designating domestic groups as terrorist organizations in the same manner as foreign entities. Antifa’s decentralized structure and First Amendment protections further complicate enforcement.
Nevertheless, the designation marks a significant escalation in federal efforts to target Antifa following Kirk’s assassination and other alleged acts of Antifa-aligned violence nationwide.
