Former President Donald Trump is anticipating a possible indictment on Thursday, having been told he’s the target of another investigation by Special Counsel Jack Smith.
A grand jury arrived in Washington on Thursday morning to hear testimony about Trump’s alleged 2020 election interference and efforts to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, NBC News reported. It could vote soon on whether to indict him.
Trump commented on the possibility of a trial over the charges on Truth Social.
“We’ll have fun on the stand with all of these people that say the Presidential Election wasn’t Rigged and Stollen,” he wrote on Wednesday. “THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY!!!”
Trump maintains he won the 2020 presidential election over President Joe Biden, alleging widespread fraud. He’s also facing a possible indictment in Georgia over election interference.
Bernard Kerik, a lawyer who worked with former Trump personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to investigate claims of voter fraud, said he has turned over documents to Smith.
“I have shared all of these documents, approximately 600 MB, mostly PDFs, with the Special Counsel and look forward to sitting down with them in about 2 weeks to discuss,” Tim Parlatore, Kerik’s lawyer, said in a statement.
The special counsel’s investigation has included interviews with former Trump associates and Washington politicians.
Former U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) said he was not interviewed. Brooks, who spoke at the Trump rally before the January 6, 2021 march on the U.S. Capitol, said he was “mildly surprised” he was not approached.
“If they asked me to, I’d explain what I know about it. Whether it’s relevant or material, I’m not sure,” he told NBC, continuing: “I was shocked [Trump] was so blatant about it — illegal conduct.”
The special counsel also reportedly was interested in a February 2020 White House briefing. NBC reported that Trump was assured of the security and integrity of the U.S. election system by federal officials.
Trump has been criminally charged in two other cases.
Smith obtained an indictment in a Florida federal court that charged Trump with mishandling classified documents after he left office.
Trump also was criminally indicted in New York on charges alleging he paid $130,000 in hush money to an adult film star during the 2016 presidential campaign.
The former commander-in-chief pleaded not guilty in both cases.
