The Trump administration announced on Thursday that it is pulling the United States out of the Green Climate Fund effective immediately, marking another reversal of international climate commitments.

The withdrawal signals a broader retreat from global climate financing mechanisms that have channeled billions toward renewable energy projects in developing nations.

“Our nation will no longer fund radical organizations like the GCF whose goals run contrary to the fact that affordable, reliable energy is fundamental to economic growth and poverty reduction,” U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said in a news release.

The Treasury Department notified the fund of America’s withdrawal and resignation from its board seat. The move aligns with Trump’s decision to exit the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Green Climate Fund was established to support developing countries’ climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. The U.S. had previously pledged billions to the fund under prior administrations.

Bessent framed the withdrawal as advancing “all affordable and reliable sources of energy.” The administration determined that continued GCF participation no longer aligned with its priorities.
