A Texas man discovered a 2.09-carat brown diamond while visiting Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas during a family trip late last month.

James Ward, a 41-year-old resident of Cypress, Texas, found the diamond on December 30 while searching the park with his wife and two young sons. The trip was inspired by his younger son’s interest in mining and crystals, according to reporting by Fox News.

Arkansas State Parks officials confirmed the stone’s authenticity and registered the find. Park staff identified the diamond as having a dark yellowish-brown color and a metallic luster, characteristics commonly associated with diamonds found at the site. The stone has since been named the “Ward Diamond.”

Crater of Diamonds State Park is one of the only places in the world where members of the public can search for diamonds and keep what they find. Park officials note that while staff are trained to identify and register diamonds, they do not appraise or grade stones. Visitors interested in determining value must seek a certified gemologist.

Ward said he realized the stone was unusual as soon as he picked it up but was unsure of its value. He has not yet decided whether he will keep the diamond or sell it after professional evaluation.

The diamond was found on the family’s second day at the park, after cold weather cut short their first attempt. Park officials say discoveries like Ward’s continue to add to a growing list of significant finds made by visitors in recent years.
