The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an investigative task force launched by President Donald Trump in collaboration with Elon Musk, has de-activated roughly 470,000 federal government credit cards this week in what it describes as another push to slash wasteful spending.

“Credit Card Update! The program to audit unused/unneeded credit cards has been expanded to 30 agencies. After 7 weeks, ~470k cards have been de-activated. As a reminder, at the start of the audit, there were ~4.6M active cards/accounts, so still more work to do,” DOGE posted to its official website on Tuesday.

The audit, spearheaded by Elon Musk’s deep dive into wasted government funds, spans more than 30 federal organizations – and follows the latest move by the Trump administration to rein in what it has previously called bloated and “unchecked bureaucratic systems.”

President Trump created DOGE in January through an Executive Order as part of a bigger campaign promising once again to drain the swamp, focusing this time on reducing the size of the government’s workforce. This effort has been highlighted by eliminating a large collection of red tape financial redundancies in the government’s budget, as previously covered by The Dallas Express.

DOGE also claims to have saved taxpayers $55 billion, according to a February 2025 update.

Their website featured a “Wall of Receipts” detailing budget cuts across federal agencies. One of the largest cuts previously listed was a $8 billion from the Department of Homeland Security. Notably, the Agency for International Development appears most frequently on the cut list, with over $6.5 billion in reductions as of two months ago. USAID and the Department of Education topped the list for total contract savings at the time, while DHS ranked sixth.

On February 14, DOGE celebrated Valentine’s Day with a rhyming post on X, celebrating the cancellation of 586 contracts across 10 agencies. One highlighted cut was an $8.2 million USDA contract for environmental compliance services tied to “climate-smart” projects.

“Roses are red, violets are blue, Today, DOGE and 10 agencies made 586 wasteful contracts bid adieu!”
