Steve Bannon, former adviser to President Donald Trump, was released from federal prison early Tuesday morning after completing a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress.
Bannon served his time at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, after being convicted for defying a subpoena related to the investigation of the events that occurred on January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capital, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
After his release, Bannon wasted no time voicing his support for Trump and urging Republican voters to mobilize against Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.
Following his release from the Federal Correctional Institution on Tuesday, he made his way to Manhattan, per AP News. There, Bannon continued his WarRoom podcast before holding an afternoon press conference.
During the press conference, Bannon expressed appreciation for being free, saying, “I’m finally out of being a political prisoner.”
He called his imprisonment a badge of honor, claiming it reinforced his commitment to his political beliefs and provided him more insight into the sentiments of working-class minorities, “yes- even Puerto Ricans,” and their perspective on the current political climate in America.
“I think you can see today I’m far from broken. I’ve been empowered by my four months in Danbury federal prison,” Bannon added. He followed by reiterating his claims about the 2020 election, saying that it was “stolen” from Trump.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) praised his release, sharing a welcome message along with a photo of Bannon and his daughter as they exited prison on Tuesday.
“Steve Bannon is a free man. He never should have been imprisoned in the first place, but the tyrannical Left held him as a political prisoner for months. Welcome back, sir,” Biggs posted to social media.
Bannon, who has faced lingering legal challenges in the past, continues to appeal his convictions.
As previously covered by DX, he also faces charges in New York related to alleged fraud in a fundraising effort for a border wall, with a trial set to begin in December. In that case, Bannon was charged with allegedly mishandling $25 million in donations intended for his organization, WeBuildTheWall Inc.
At the press conference, Bannon spoke confidently about the future of the Republican party and the upcoming election, saying, “We have teams right now that are going to make sure that this thing is not going to be stolen. Everything we’ve fought for for years is coming to fruition.”
