The U.S. Department of State on Sunday advised Americans worldwide, and especially in the Middle East, to exercise increased caution amid increasingly tense geopolitical situations.
The worldwide security alert warns that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world.
Periodic airspace closures may cause travel disruptions, the notice stated. Americans abroad should follow guidance in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
The department encouraged travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov to receive the latest security alerts. It also recommended following the “U.S. Department of State – Security Updates for U.S. Citizens” channel on WhatsApp or @TravelGov on X.
When planning travel, citizens should carefully review the Travel Advisory and detailed information for their destination, along with any recent alerts, at travel.state.gov/destination.Consular information for those in the Middle East is updated regularly on the State Department website.
Anyone needing assistance is urged to contact the 24/7 Task Force by calling 1-202-501-4444 from abroad or 1-888-407-4747 from the U.S. and Canada.
