While speaking at the 2022 Texas Democratic Convention, Democrat state Rep. James Talarico called for President Donald Trump to be prosecuted, The Dallas Express has learned.
Talarico addressed the Texas Democratic Convention on July 16, 2022, at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center in Dallas. He called on then-President Joe Biden to destroy “Trumpism” – and prosecute Trump for the January 6, 2021, demonstration at the U.S. Capitol.
“Mr. President, you saved our nation once by defeating Trump; now we need you to restore its soul by defeating Trumpism,” Talarico addressed Biden. “Lease federal land to abortion providers, declare a public health emergency, impeach justices who lied under oath, prosecute Trump and his fellow insurrectionists, and finally call the filibuster what it is – a Jim Crow relic.”
Democrat voters in Texas elected Talarico over U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary for Senate on March 3, as The Dallas Express reported. Now, as Talarico prepares to face the winner of the May 26 Republican runoff between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton.
During his 2022 speech, Talarico urged Biden to be “brave” and take bold, swift action.
Talarico Campaign Spokesman J.T. Ennis told The Dallas Express the candidate is not solely focused on any particular politician.
“James is building a people-powered movement to take on this broken, corrupt political system – not any one politician, not any one political party, but the billionaire mega donors and puppet politicians who are redesigning our politics for their own profit,” Ennis told DX.
Meanwhile, RNC Spokesman Zach Kraft told The Dallas Express he condemns Talarico’s remarks.
“James Talarico’s dreams of imprisoning President Trump and installing abortion centers in every federal building in Texas might get applause at Democrat conventions, but they will be overwhelmingly rejected by Texas voters,” Kraft said.
Weeks ahead of his 2022 speech, Talarico appeared to be in favor of the idea of offering abortions in federal facilities. To this end, he called to abolish the electoral college.
“Ultimately, the only way to save American democracy is to abolish the undemocratic loopholes in our system – like the electoral college and the filibuster – and re-establish majority rule,” he posted on X on June 24, 2022. “But women need abortion care *now*.”
Ennis told DX Talarico is aiming to fight rising costs and corruption.
“As costs continue to rise and corruption in Washington deepens, James is focused on changing the politics of our state and country and taking power back for working people,” he said.
Kraft told DX he thinks Talarico’s statements are too radical for Texas voters.
“Texans don’t want to see their president prosecuted, and they certainly don’t want to see their tax dollars fund a deranged abortion-on-demand agenda that was deemed too extreme by Kamala Harris and Joe Biden,” he said.
