The Pentagon has fired its household goods contractor and created a new task force to fix the military’s troubled moving system.

Army Maj. Gen. Lance Curtis will lead the Permanent Change of Station Joint Task Force, which has the authority to make immediate improvements to how service members move their belongings.

The shakeup comes after years of complaints from military families about damaged goods, lost items, and delayed shipments during relocations. Moving headaches have become a major quality-of-life issue affecting retention and readiness.

The Defense Department terminated HomeSafe Alliance LLC for cause, citing the company’s “demonstrated inability to fulfill their obligations and deliver high quality moves to Service members.”

The Pentagon had awarded HomeSafe a $20 billion contract in 2021 to manage military moves worldwide. The company’s failures left thousands of families scrambling during peak moving season.

Officials are reverting to the older “Tender of Service” system to handle current moves. Service members who move themselves will receive higher reimbursement rates.

Curtis’s task force must deliver a strategic reform plan to the Secretary of Defense by September 2025. The group is reviewing the entire relocation process to identify rapid fixes.
