At least one person died, and five more were wounded after a gunman began shooting in a church on Sunday in Laguna Woods, California.
Shortly after 1 p.m. on May 15, a man opened fire at Geneva Presbyterian Church. According to church leader Tom Cramer, members were at a lunch reception to honor a former pastor of the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department tweeted that one of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, and the surviving individuals were transported to a hospital.
According to Hallock, the suspect was captured after a group of individuals at the church hogtied Chou’s legs with an extension cord and removed at least two firearms from him.
“That group of churchgoers displayed what we believe is exceptional heroism and bravery,” said Hallock. “It’s safe to say that had they not intervened, this situation could have been much worse.”
Four men, ages 66, 75, 82, and 92, and one woman, age 86, were among the shooting victims.
There were approximately 30-40 participants at the reception when the shooting occurred.
The suspect is 68-year-old David Chou of Las Vegas, Nevada.
In another tweet, the department stated that Chou is charged with one count of criminal murder and five counts of attempted murder.
Governor Gavin Newsom of California stated that his office has partnered with local law enforcement.
“No one should have to fear going to their place of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, community, and all those impacted by this tragic event,” said Newsom.
According to a statement from the sheriff’s department, authorities are investigating whether he has any ties to the church or its members.
