President Donald Trump addressed House Republicans on Tuesday at their annual member retreat held at the Kennedy Center, on the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, Capitol protest.
During his remarks, the President assailed investigations into the 2021 events, highlighted support from individuals who had received pardons related to the protest, and criticized ongoing public and media focus on the date.
In January of 2025, on his first day starting his second term in the White House, Trump pardoned roughly 1,500 individuals charged in connection with the protest, per CBS News.
In his wide-ranging remarks, which lasted over an hour, Trump urged Republicans to highlight administration achievements when campaigning for the 2026 midterms, describing them as a “roadmap to victory.”
“We’ve had the most successful first year of any President in history,” said Trump.
The retreat focused on GOP legislative priorities for 2026, including border security, spending reductions, health care policy, and crime.
The White House shared the event via a live audio broadcast on X, posting: “President Trump Delivers Remarks at the House GOP Member Retreat” with a link to the stream.
Trump dedicated part of his remarks to the late Rep. Doug LaMalfa.
