The mother of NBC “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie has been reported missing from her home in southern Arizona, prompting a search by local authorities and an investigation involving homicide detectives.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her residence in the Catalina Foothills area near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue outside Tucson, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
A family member called 911 about noon Sunday to report her disappearance, Sheriff Chris Nanos said. He described the effort as a search-and-rescue mission conducted by air and ground forces, with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection resources, including helicopters and an airplane.
Nanos noted concerning circumstances at the home but declined to elaborate. He said foul play has not been ruled out, and homicide detectives are involved. The sheriff added that Nancy Guthrie is not in good physical health, raising grave concern, and she is without necessary medication, though her family reported no cognitive issues such as dementia.
She is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
The case has drawn national attention because of her daughter’s prominence on the morning news program, where Savannah Guthrie has served as co-anchor since 2012.
In a statement released Monday through the “Today” show, Savannah Guthrie said: “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351-4900.”
Authorities urged the public to call 911 immediately with any information about her whereabouts.
The sheriff’s department held a media briefing Sunday evening and scheduled another for 9 a.m. Monday. The investigation remains active.
