A 19-year-old man accused of plotting a racist mass shooting at a Hindu temple outside Chicago will receive hormone injections for a “gender transition” while awaiting trial in jail, the New York Post reported.
A Cook County judge ordered Alexandros Paporakis, of Palatine, detained Wednesday. He faces one count of making a terrorist threat, a Class X felony, and one count of unlawfully possessing a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches, a Class 3 felony, police said in a news release.
The judge issued a jail healthcare order noting Paporakis’ hormone injections and treatment for ADHD, depression and anxiety, NBC Chicago reported. His public defender cautioned that the police and prosecution accounts remain allegations and could change as the investigation proceeds, the outlet reported.
Coworker alerted police
Officers arrested Paporakis on Sunday after a coworker reported alarming communications, police said. He worked at a Taco Bell in Arlington Heights, prosecutors said in court records reported by FOX 32 Chicago.
Paporakis allegedly told the coworker his rifle had jammed and discussed another attempt, saying he could “retry when I fix this,” prosecutors alleged.
An eight-page document attributed to Paporakis described white supremacist and neo-Nazi beliefs and plans to kill people of Indian ancestry, Jewish people and black people, prosecutors alleged.
Investigators recovered an AR-style rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines, 300 rounds of rifle ammunition, a tactical vest and Nazi imagery from his residence, prosecutors said.
Police traced vehicle to temple
Surveillance showed a red Acura RDX registered to Paporakis entering a Hindu temple parking lot at about 12:25 p.m. on October 11, police said during Thursday’s update, FOX 32 Chicago reported.
Police had not confirmed whether the rifle actually jammed or established where the alleged shooting attempt occurred, the outlet reported.
“The seriousness of this alleged threat cannot be overstated,” Palatine Police Chief William Nord said in the department’s release, which WBBM Newsradio published in full.
In a separate case covered by The Dallas Express, Nicholas Roske, who identifies as “transgender,” pleaded guilty to attempting to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Paporakis is due back in court October 30 at 9 a.m. in Rolling Meadows, police said.
