The White House has accused Minnesota’s Democratic leadership of refusing to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, saying the state’s “Democrat politicians” have chosen “defiance over partnership” with the Trump administration.
In a January 16 statement titled “Minnesota’s ‘Sanctuary’ Defiance Has Consequences,” the White House said Minnesota officials have repeatedly promoted what it described as “sanctuary” policies and rhetoric opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“This toxic combination of ‘sanctuary’ policies and anti-ICE rhetoric has created a climate of hostility that endangers federal officers and incites violence,” per the White House.
The administration noted that responsibility for expanded federal enforcement operations in Minnesota — and the resulting tension — “lies squarely” with officials who, according to the statement, refuse to work with federal authorities and instead put their “Radical Left agenda” over public safety and the rule of law.
Statements Cited by the White House
The White House statement compiled public remarks from Minnesota officials spanning several years and presented them as evidence of resistance to federal immigration enforcement.
Among those cited was Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who expressed in past remarks, “There is nothing in American law that requires local officials to cooperate with federal law enforcement officials,” and warned that Minnesota law enforcement agencies “risk significant civil liability if they enforce immigration detainers.”
Gov. Tim Walz was quoted as stating that enforcing federal immigration law “is not” the role of state or local law enforcement.
The statement also cited comments from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who said Minneapolis would not cooperate with ICE and would remain a “safe haven,” as well as remarks from U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar opposing deportations and supporting sanctuary policies.
Additional statements referenced in the White House release came from Minneapolis City Council members, state legislators, and local officials who have argued that cooperation with federal immigration enforcement undermines community trust or exceeds local authority.
Context of Recent Federal Operations
The White House statement follows recent federal enforcement activity in Minnesota and heightened public scrutiny of ICE operations in the state.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, the White House earlier this month publicly pushed back against media coverage and Democratic criticism following a fatal ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis.
In that reporting, The Dallas Express noted that federal and local officials offered differing accounts of the incident and that the White House accused Democratic rhetoric of contributing to a hostile environment for federal officers.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and no charges have been announced.
Administration Position
The White House framed Minnesota as an example of what it described as the consequences of sanctuary policies, arguing that jurisdictions declining to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement should expect increased federal involvement.
The statement did not announce new policy actions but emphasized that federal authorities would continue carrying out immigration enforcement operations regardless of opposition from state or local officials.
