Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Friday that she will resign from Congress, ending a years-long political alliance with President Donald Trump following a public split over her reelection bid.

In a statement posted on X, Greene said she no longer wished to subject her family or her district to a contested primary after President Donald Trump withdrew his support.

“I have too much self respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for,” Greene wrote. She added that Republicans would “likely lose the midterms,” and that she would still be expected to defend President Donald Trump “against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me.”

Greene said the political environment surrounding her had become untenable.

“It’s all so absurd and completely unserious. I refuse to be a battered wife hoping it all goes away and gets better,” she wrote. “If I am cast aside by MAGA Inc and replaced by Neocons, Big Pharma, Big Tech, Military Industrial War Complex, foreign leaders, and the elite donor class that can’t even relate to real Americans, then many common Americans have been cast aside and replaced as well.”

She said she plans to step away from politics entirely.

“Until then I’m going back to the people I love, to live life to the fullest as I always have, and look forward to a new path ahead. I will be resigning from office with my last day being January 5, 2026,” Greene wrote.

President Donald Trump reacted to the announcement in comments to ABC News reporter Rachel Scott.

“I think it’s great news for the country. It’s great,” he said. When asked whether he had been informed beforehand, he replied, “Nah, it doesn’t matter, you know but I think it’s great. I think she should be happy.”

Some commentators defended Greene, arguing she had been loyal to President Donald Trump throughout his legal battles.

“MTG flew to NYC to stand outside the courthouse supporting Trump during his trials, campaigned around the country for him and one hundred percent supports his agenda, but because she supported releasing the Epstein files like any sane, decent person these wackos viciously attack her,” Ann Coulter wrote on X.

Others criticized her decision to resign before the end of her term.

“Some yes but the people I have talked to are disgusted that she quit and threw her constituents under the bus by not serving her full term,” one user wrote. “An adult professional would have just given reasons why they wouldn’t be seeking reelection and we both know it.”

The Dallas Express reached out to Greene for comment but did not receive a response.
